    Coralline algae and salt

Salt quality has a little to do with it, but keeping your parameters stable,.. Such as low phosphate, low nitrate, stable pH, stable temperature, low dissolved solids, and calcium alkalinity and magnesium levels close to natural sea water, it will grow without it being scrubbed. Scrubbing it...

    Back to basics- 29g adventure

Everything is going fine. I'm happy so far. I'll make a bigger update when I get on my laptop.

    canopy vs no canopy

If you add glass tops, it limits oxygen exchange and causes the pH to decrease. It's not good for tank inhabitants.

    So...what's your "secret?"

Eh. Whatever makes you sleep at night. I just know what works for me. Those are MY "secrets" and they might not work for you. This thread asked for individual opinions. Mine might not work for you, but it doesn't make me wrong. You can have a salt tank on a budget, I know I do and have for the...

    So...what's your "secret?"

Money. You can have a great tank if you have the money to invest in it, regardless of if you know what your doing or not. You could have someone else maintain it and buy everything for you. Money is a good thing to have. Patience. Patience is perhaps the hardest thing to learn in this...

    Back to basics- 29g adventure

I didn't get to go to the fish store today. They closed before I was able to make it over there. Oh well. It's all good. Maybe one day this week I might go there and find a few five dollar frags to grab. Found a lead on what fan I need to replace the fan on my LED unit. It's a cheap fix.

    Back to basics- 29g adventure

Yes, Eric. I test my calcium and alkalinity weekly and its stable when I dose. Bang, you win in the creativity department. My jars were cheaper though. ;) The montipora I bought last week is putting on new growth. Everything is doing well so far. Tomorrow I plan on buying a couple more...

    DIY kalkwasser top off.

Whipped up something to help keep Ca, all, mag, and strontium levels up. So far so good. The glass jars are from target for $1. I used a screw to make a hole in the lid and used a Philips head bit to round out the hole bigger for the silicone air line tubing to fit snugly. A tiny hole was...

    Sump and Refugium Size

Lol, your welcome. I know I would have saved a lot of money if I started on forums first, but back in the day, anecdotal evidence was just about all we had and even that was rare.

    coralife?

If you have facebook, you can join the cheap Chinese blackbox page and there are many wonderful examples and pretty tanks to look at. Don't just take my advice.

    what is this coral?

Looks like gsp to me. If you got that for $5, be glad she made a mistake.

    coralife?

Amazon has them if you do a search for 165w full spectrum led aquarium light. I believe it's one that is right around $100, depending on the time of the year and the market.

    skimmer?

Not sure if that was sarcastic? Lol Anyways, keep us updated on your tank. Best of luck!

I feel like im running the bare minimum.

Yep. Anything less than 23 watts never worked for me either.

    Sump and Refugium Size

Proflex has good sumps. A larger glass tank like a 40g would be ideal. A 20g is small if used for a sump and fuge on a 150. I wouldn't chance it using it on a display tank that big as a sump anyway. A 30 long, a 40g long, a 40g breeder, a 55g might be best if your stand is tall enough.

    skimmer?

A reef octopus 105 HOB would be great. They have fail safe features that I really like and it skims like a beast. Eshopps has some relatively cheap options. Hang on back skimmers are bulky in the tank but can be cleverly hidden.

    coralife?

I like the cheap Chinese led lights on amazon. So far so good with mine. The only problem I have with it is a slight rattle of the computer fan, which could be fixed but I'm lazy.
