    Back to basics- 29g adventure

In the hospital now, fixing to have our new baby boy arrive. They are holding my wife here until we have a crying, eating, pooping machine for us to take home.

Why I continue to use Reef Crystals...

Scrape some off the side and add a couple drops of vinegar to it. If it foams, its calcium. Then again, if you want to really find out what it is, send it off to a lab. Lol. Last time I mixed saltwater, within one week or so it started clouding up on me and formjnf crystals.... I just don't...

Why I continue to use Reef Crystals...

Hmmm..... Most people use the bare minimum when it comes to salt mixes. Mg live fish store mixes instant ocean, which has been the trade mark go-to salt since the hobby began. I personally like to use instant ocean, then test my batch and add the necessary amounts of elements to match my...

Ugh. We have house ants. I have been trying to stay away from using spray poisons. I'm gonna use vinegar on them and then sprinkle grits to see if that works. Just another day on this Earth. I'm hoping that spraying the vinegar around won't disturb the tank. But now my house smells like a pickle...

Jeez, I can't believe what one day of growth looks like when you have the proper parameters. Everything is looking great. If I were to make any changes at this point, I would get a different, higher quality LED light and an MP10.

This is the hydnophora when I got it. It was looking sickly and white in spots when I bought it. Then after being in my tank it went brown for a bit to recover and now that my parameters are in line, and phosphate is low, it seems to have perked up a bit and started encrusting on the plug...

Blue ridge when I got it. It's really a nothing special coral. It was free, and if it ever grows on the glass, you get to see a beautiful blue skeleton. Blue ridge starting to encrust since increasing my calcium and alkalinity... It's grown that much around the base in the last four or...

This is what it looked like the day I got the Monti cap home... Poor condition. This is it this morning, its grown about an inch or more in all directions and has nearly completely healed itself underneath, growing over the old dead skeleton.

Lol, sorry for the confusion. I thought I clearly stated I was currently using Kent Tech M. If I made up a DIY mix of magnesium, I'd use a 50/50 mix of epsom salt and mag flake and then do a mandatory monthly water change of 30%. But I'm not using a DIY magnesium supplement, I'm using Kent...

    Back to basics- 29g adventure

I read the article a long time ago. I'm not concerned, since I am using Kent tech M for magnesium. I'd use magnesium chloride or more commonly known as mag flake road salt.... But its not commonly sold in Louisiana. That's OK though, a little Kent tech M is cheap as well. So, I get home and...

    Back to basics- 29g adventure

I learned most of the chemistry from my formal education... But I know there are a few great articles out there, especially the ones by Randy Holmes-Farley. He discusses in detail what three part dosing is and he gives several different recipes to make your own at home, like I do. I buy a...

Pegasus,... You don't know what I used for my alkalinity. ;) I used half sodium carbonate, half sodium bicarbonate and mixed it 2x strength. And since its a mix and 2x strength, its approximately 3x-4x lower the dose. So its basically running parallel currently. I have not looked at it this...

    Back to basics- 29g adventure

So if I did it right, I have concluded that my calcium drops by 20mg/L per day and my alk drops 1dKH per day. I'm dosing 4oz calcium and 1.5oz alkalinity and a few drops of Kent tech M every day. I'll test again tomorrow to see where it stands and then maybe test again next weekend. Things...

    Back to basics- 29g adventure

Yeah, I need a generator as well. But I'm working on a plan to build a small cold smoke, smoke house for meat preservation. Being off grid, and/or prepared to go off grid long term is important to me. A generator is too loud and requires an unsustainable fuel source. I'd rather build a...

Power came on again. It was only off for a couple of hours. Been having a lot of those lately. I'm gonna test my parameters to see where they are and how much it has dropped in 48 hours. I

    Back to basics- 29g adventure

I kinda like my method of dosing a bit better than frequent water changes. I know that water changes replenish trace elements, which is why I still do water changes. My power is out at the house right now and I have absolutely no battery backups. I think I might need to invest in at least an...
