    Alkalinity at 5.5 meq/L + ?

IMO your alkalinity is running high because your calcium is running low. You can lower the alkalinity simply by increasing the calcium.

    placment of elegant

They are found on the sand in nature... no matter where it ends up start it at the bottom until it gets used to your lighting.

    mh bulbs

I agree... just remember to acclimate the tank to the new bulbs. There will be a decent increase in light output when you move to the 10ks so your corals will need time to adjust.

    NO Buffers!

Personally I'd get Kent Turbo Calcium. It's a dry product but you get more for your money. Kent superbuffer is also a good product.

    NO Buffers!

It's not automatic by any means but if your alk is 2.5meq/l then you should shoot for a calcium of around 410ppm (I keep mine around 3.0/420 to 3.5/430). I say "around" because you can drive yourself nuts chasing numbers and there is no reason to... just get them close. Kalk will provide a...

    NO Buffers!

When you read "never use buffers" it's usually referring to PH adjustments or in newly mixed saltwater. Buffers should not be used to adjust the PH or added to newly mixed saltwater but it should be used to adjust the tank's alkalinity. Kalk will provide both alkalinity and calcium but you...

    Should I run 3 250's or 2 400's?

3-250, you need one MH for every 24" and with the tank being less than 24" deep the 250 have plenty penetration.

    sump/cheato question

I agree with ejensen... chrato does not require strong lighting... but the more light you have the more growth you will get.

Getting rid of Bryopsis and Hair Algae!

I had a Bryopsis Algae outbreak in my old sps tank and it about never went away. I ended up getting a Fox Face LO and he did a good job of controlling it. I never really got rid of it until I took down my MHs.

    electric help. gfci basics..

The plug in GFCIs will work fine. I'd have both a GFCI & a Surge Protector on your tank. Ground Probes are just rods that go into the water. They have a wire connected that plugs into the receptacles ground. I have never seen them outside of an aquarium store but they can be made.

I bet I have stray voltage

You can put the black end of the meter into the neutral (larger slot) or the ground. Most tanks have stray voltage but I do not think it would be causing those kinds of problems?? My 55g had like 36volts once running through the water coming from a RIO pump… it did not trip the GFCI.

    Baby Parakeet Sexing

Thanks Mike. They do not bite but they are skittish. One reason we got them from a breeder and not a pet shop is we were hoping they would already be somewhat tame??
