    Screw in HID power compacts

I think a 175W would be perfect for a 30gallon tank. If you put a good reflector in and paint the unreflected sides a glossy white it will help push light around. A good rule of thumb is 3-5W per gallon... at 5W per gallon thats 150, with some to spare. The bulb is about 8" long so its a good...

what are your guys opinion on the coralife needlewheel super skimmer

I have one, and i like it. It wasnt that hard to setup and once i got it tuned in where i liked it, it was good to go. It pulls some nasty sludge out of the water if you dry skim, and it pulls nasty green water out if you wet skim, for the price its very well made and works very well.

    Screw in HID power compacts

NYTrillium... if you want cheap MH lamps that work really well i have a set of 175W with 10,000K or a 14,000K bulb or a 250W with 14,000K bulb that i have to sell. (My wife is making me do it :( ) They arent wired, but i will wire them if you want so they are ready to install in your canopy. Im...

    Floresent vs Metal Halide

If you want to have a reef tank, and want the ultimate flexibility. Metal Halides are the way to go, they are brighter, and give the beautiful shimmer effect in the tank. flourecents you will need more bulbs, and therefore more expensive to change them out when it comes time. I have a 250W and a...

How Do I Change A 55g Tank Into A Sump?

What you will probably want to do is turn it into a sump/fuge combo. Id recommend looking up Melev's Reef on google and doing a similar setup as his Model F. I have a custom acrylic sump that bchbum built me that is modeled after it, and i love it... very nice. Then just in the fuge stock up...

    Buying Equipment

Sand... go with agronite sand. You could even get a bag of the live sand too to seed it.

    Buying Equipment

Sailfert test kits are the best. Id go with them. Salt i like Instant Ocean and Oceanic. Both are good IMO. I use IO now because it was on sale. Thermometer, id say a simple digital sticker type is good, that has never failed me.

    Protein Skimmer and Lights upgrade

I dont know of any anenomes that can be ok with NO lighting. I would suggest a single 175W metal halide pendant above your tank if you want to do somthing with anenemoes. That, and it looks like you will need a lot more flow in your tank too. I didnt see any power heads.

anybody know about metal halide ballasts??

If there is transformer in it, its bumping up voltage on the one end up to 289V. Thats normal. If you havent tried replacing the bulb, do so. Otherwise the capacitor doesnt look like its charging up and then subsequently discharging to start the light.

    DIY metal halide question

Its probably a magnetic ballast, and a very low temp bulb around 4000K maybe. THis is unsuitable for a reef tank. You need at least 10000K for a reef tank. Magnetic ballasts can be noisey, hot, and bulbs dont last as long. It also doesnt appear to come with a reflector.

    Protein Skimmer and Lights upgrade

If you want to keep anenomies or anything pretty, 150 for lights wont be enough. A decent power compact will be more than that, and you will need to get rid of your hood. For the skimmer, id just cut that plastic out on the back there, and get one for hanging on the back. Get as big a skimmer...

    any input on a refuge

If you want to get rid of power heads, get a SCWD. It randomly redirects your flow from one outlet nozzle to another. They are around $35, require no power, and is put on the outlet of your return pump. I had one for a while, and loved it. Do some searches on google and you can find all sorts of...

    sump/fuge question

Id get the biggest and best skimmer you can afford. That way you can use it for a bigger tank when the time comes. If you dont cheap out now, you will save in the long run.

    any input on a refuge

Kent marine makes them, i think they may sell them here. I add no salt to the filtered water because when the water in the tank evaporates it leaves the salt in the tank and only the water goes away. I wouldnt make one, they are only 10-15 dollars, thats too cheap to worry about it. I just...

    overflow/return pump question

Uh, dont slow the overflow down, get a bigger pump. I would say use a couple of PVC ball valves in line if you absoultely must, but i would recommend a bigger pump. Bigger than what your overflow is, because u can always throttle the outlet of a pump safely. jasen

    any input on a refuge

Well my sump is a custom acrylic sump bchbum built me, very good prices. I drilled a 1/2" hole in the side and installed a float valve. Up its shut, down its open. I then ran a 1/4" rigid tube from it to my 55 gallon drum that my RO/DI fills up. I installed a bulkhead in the bottom of it, used a...
