Can I use sand from the beach?

I have use sand collected from the gulf in my tank. I have a deep (maybe 5") bed in the main tank and at least 6" in another tank where I grow seagrass. I collected it from the beach wadding out as far as I could go. I had scuba available, but I did not think that it was worth it trying to...

    Removing algea from hard coral

I have a 4 year old piece of hard coral (unknown species collected from the gulf of mexico) that has tufts of hair algea persistently growing on the branch tips. I have been brushing it down with a toothbrush, but I can't get all of the algea off. Any suggestions?

Xenia problem and I am willing to trade it off for some thing i don't have

Reeferdawg, I live south of you in Borger. Let me know if you ever get down this way. I would give you a Xenia, but I understand that you have plenty. Jimnlee, I have shipped xenia by suspending them upside down under a small foam block. The base rock can be attached by rubber bands. I don't...

    pulsing xenia problem

Howdy I use a dab of superglue to hold xenia to rocks all of the time (I have two tanks and raise them for trade). Raise the base up out of the water and either dab the glue on the animal or the rock. Hold it bottom-up for half a minute while the glue dries applying firm but gentle pressure...

    Refractometer calibration

RO water (I assume that it is home made RO) will work just fine. Distilled water will also work, but stay away from bottled beverage water (some contain lots of minerals). Tap water works too.

    What do BTA eat?

Thanks for the advice! They started eating (shrimp) and have gotten a little stickier. I did notice that they don't like my finger and eat better if I use plastic tongs to feed them. One stays put and one has wondered around since I put it in the tank a week ago.

    clown spasms

My tank raised clowns have done that since they were little. They grow out of it somewhat. I've kept wild caught clowns and they never spasmed. Has anyone else noticed that? For that matter, does anyone have an idea about why they do that?

    What do BTA eat?

I just got them in Tuesday. They are sticky, but not as sticky as other anemones that I keep (don't know if it is normal). Are BTAs usually very sticky, or just a little sticky? They did get a little hot during shipping, and turned inside out. But they recovered within an hour of acclimation...

    What do BTA eat?

I've just added two to my anemone and clownfish aquariums. The BTAs refused table shrimp and white fish. Any suggestions? Also, I remember a post that mentioned BTAs being feed every 2 weeks. Is that typical? I feed my other anemones every 3 days.

help with clowns not sure if diseased or not?

I suggest catching the clowns, giving them a 5+ minute dip in fresh water, then keeping them in isolation (with UV sterilizer if you have it). Clowns don't seem to tolerate copper treatment, but don't seem to mind fresh water dips. I use this for new fish, followed by a month of quarentine...
