if its a new tank, cycle with all the LR you can afford or want to put in. it will still take 4-6+/- weeks. This is assuming that the LR is UNCURED. You don't want to cycle with cured rock.

Egg crate on top of the LS? Just under the top layer so its out of sight? Is its purpose to creat a larger base (like a snow shoe), so if a fish burrows under the load is spread out?

I usually use 1-1.5" pvc pilings cut to a 4" lengths to hold up the base rocks. leaving it just above the sandbed. they can be glued to the rocks as well. I did this as I had a couple of fish burrowing under which would cause an avalanch. No deadspots
