    Urgent! 45g Reef SE Michigan

I have a 45g tall reef tank, but have been increasingly unable to put the required time into it as I am a grad student in biochem. Today, I had a plumbing mishap that would have flooded my house had I not been here, and I've decided that this was a sign that I should get out of the hobby until...

Torch Frag for trade in SE Michigan

Hey everyone I will be fragging my torch coral soon to alleviate some overcrowding, and was wondering if anyone in the Ann Arbor/metro Detroit area was interested in a trade. I haven't fragged it yet, but it will be 4-6 heads of a very healthy, growing torch. I'll be adding a pic soon. I would...

    SPS advice

Hey everyone I am interested in branching out into trying some easy SPS corals, but what I want to know is whether or not it is worth it. Tank: 45 gallon (~ 36" x 24" x 16") Lights: 4x95w VHO (=380 watts) I've had very good luck with softies and lps (leathers, ricordia, torch, frogspawn, etc)...

Lesions on side of Coral beauty

Hi everyone My coral beauty had developed some white lesions on one side of its body, and I was wondering what I ought to do about it. His history includes an ick problem that had subsided about a week ago - is this just the progression of the ick, or something different? I wanted to get him...

Hope for missing conchs out there...

Well, I have had a fighting conch in my tank since the beginning as part of my clean up crew. I've noticed him bury himself a couple of times for a while, but I always knew where he was and he never stayed burried for more than a few days. Then, about 6 weeks ago, I couldn't find him and...

    Too full?

Ok, I know most of you out there hate these types of posts, but here goes. Would this stocking list be too much in a 45 gallon? 1 b&w clown 2 firefish gobies 1 Yellow watchman goby [1 6 line wrasse] [1 flame angel] The fish in brackets are ones I don't have yet. I had always planned on adding...

    Stretching Exercises

My xenia frags are exactly 4 weeks old today, and one of them has started to grow off the rubble piece and onto a big rock. Today, I came home and saw the rubble piece had fallen, but the xenia was stuck to the large rock too. I rescued it, but not before snapping a pic! Sam

    pH/temperature monitor?

Hi Everyone I'm interested in getting a digital pH monitor, but I haven't seen one that also displays temperature as well. It seems like an easy feature that they would have, but they don't as far as I can tell. The pH probes in the lab I work in all diplay temp as well as pH, but they cost ~...

First ever pics of my young reef

Well, I'm experimenting with photography on my ~4 month old 45 gallon. Here are few pics; hope you all enjoy! Here's a Xenia shot I posted on another thread.

    Perceived nitrate inconsistency

I have a nitrate question that hopefully someone can answer for me. I've always been under the impression that nitrates were bad for corals, even more so than for fish. But I've also heard discussions about using fast growing corals (i.e. xenia) as a method of nitrate export. In one of the...

    Cleanup crew survival

My 45 gallon has been set up for around 2 months, and all I have in it is a single ocellaris clown and a cleanup crew consisting of: 12 Astrea 6 Nassarius 1 (really big) emerald crab 1 (3in) fighting conch 1 Peppermint shrimp I got the cleanup crew about a month ago right when I got my diatom...

    Unknown Crab ID

I have some limited info, and hope the experts out there can help me out. I got a new piece of live rock today, and tonight noticed there was a critter hiding in one of the holes. All I could see were legs that looked like they belonged to a crab, but couldn't be sure. They were brownish and...

    How do Fighting Conchs work?

Just got a fighting conch to clean up my sandbed a bit. Saw some crazy looking eyes come out and what looked like a little snail arm come out and move some sand. What do conchs do? Do they suck like a snail or eat like a crab? Someone please enlighten me on conchs. I find them quite...

    Catalina Goby?

Hey all I was wondering what (if anything) people know about catalina gobies (lythrypnus dalli). There coloration is quite cool! Another webiste that sells them says they are good reef fish, but mentions they would really prefer cooler temps. It also says they are great in small schools. How...

    Tang for 45?

I love hippo tangs and naso tangs, but I know that a 45 gallon tank is too small. Does anyone have any recommendations for a 45 FOWLR (but will eventually be a reef)? Right now I'm just cycling my tank, but the tank is 36x12x24 and I have 4x96 VHO and 65 lbs LR. I'm just in the planning...

    LFS for the locals

Hello Just wondering if any Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti/Detroit area people had recomendations for LFS in that area. I used to go to Fish Doctors in Ypsi, but I'm becoming less and less satisfied there. Also, for the general audience I was hoping to solicit advice on lighting sites to order online...

    Limitations of VHO

What types of corals are impossible to keep, regardless of how much VHO a tank has? I am interested in upgrading my lights to start keeping corals in my 45 high, and liked the idea of 4x95 watt, 2 10K and 2 actinic 03. If I had this set up, what couldn't I have? - lighting wise, that is :)

    Metal Halide only

Just wondering what people think about having only metal halides in a reef tank. If I were to use exclusively metal halides (I'm considering a 2x175 watt retro for a 45 high), would I want to use 10,000K or higher, like 14? (or one of each?) THANKS!

    Lighting for a deep tank

I have a question for all you knowledgable people out there. I have a brand new 45 gallon tall tank, so it is 36" long but ~24" deep. My intentions are to start out with a not-very-ambitious reef, but make sure things won't be too hard to upgrade down the road if I want to get more difficult...
