    New Feathers Duster(s) during cycle

okay total noob question time...what would make you think it'd be of the small colony type instead of the larger (1"-2" crown) varieties like those that were in the tank the LR came from? Definately no complaints either way, I'm just tickled to keep finding new life every few days in what was a...

    New Feathers Duster(s) during cycle

A new tank that has only been up for two weeks, still cycling, but to my surprise I found a 'baby' feather duster on a chunk of LR (her tube is only ~3mm long) but very active and seems happy, but i seriously doubt there is much phyto to eat in there yet. The tank is 55g w/25lbs of cured LR...

    Drill holes in glass

Good deal! BTW you can add my count up to three successful attempts now Wanted to try soemthing new, old 10g critter tank it had a little 1/4" hole in very bottom, so rather than trying to seal it up I was able to enlarge it to 1" and manufactured a 1/2" PVC bulkhead, now she'll have a...

    Drill holes in glass

Word is a lot of patience, dremel tool with diamond tipped bits, and lots of water to cool the bit. Actually have to slowly 'grind' the hole out. I've managed to do this successfully twice. You DO NOT want to know how many unsuccessful attempts were made. YMMV Dave

    My LR has fleas

The tank is exactly 11 days into her cycle, and now I got little white critters running all over the LR. Assuming these are them little pods I've read about, they are no bigger than a flea (probably smaller). But it's cool to see something in there besides water, 20 lbs of LR, and a big...

    agrocrete curing

Just out of curiosity I tested the PH of the water after 12 hours of the 'new' (4-5 days old now) rocks soaking in it... off the chart of half a dozen FW test kits I'm trying to use up... my SW kit shows 8.2 (perfect for the SWA)... then for comparison i tested my tap water (50' well water that...

    agrocrete curing

Got my first batch curing right now as well, curing probably isn't the right term here. But from everything I've read so far, best bet is to just soak them in fresh water for at least 6 weeks, or until the ph of the water stabilzes at 7.0 and stays there. I change the water twice daily. I've...

    leaching storage containers?

The thought that your 'Rubbermaid" containers were treated with an algaecide (sp) and may be leaching the silicates is very possible. Mother-in-Law runs a Nursery/Greenhouse and found the same problem with some containers for her flowers and such. Just a thought.

Tell me I didn't hose everything....

Okay been lurking for quite a while. And here goes for a first post. I've been maintaining FWA's for quite a while, well lets say 25+ years over 100's of tanks (i was breeding for a while there) and let it go. But this is my first SWA and what a passion it's becoming...the plans I have for the...
