To get a system to cycle, does the tank need light??

Has anyone ever glassed the own tank from scratch?? I am thinking about doing this, using a 1/2 inch piece of acrylic as the viewing window. What do y'all think??

At what pH will shrimp die?? Our research tanks are at 6.14. Our alkalinity is at 17ppm. I have told the higher ups that something HAS to be done but being a government job, well anyway. I expect Monday to find a tank full of dead shrimp. :mad:

I have heard of two methods for keeping fish in the tank. Tight lid and a ten inch "wall" around the top. Which is better and are there any other methods?? Thanks, Jeremy :notsure:

I have noticed in a lot of y'alls pics that in the tanks are enough LR to start a small island. Is that a must? I want nice hiding areas and some corals and anemone but I think in one of the 55g pics I saw there was prob 10g of water. Is that just up to me? Jeremy

Does sand color make a difference? Black or white?? I want to put a mix in. I will not have as much rock as some of the other aquariums I have seen, so the bottom is going to be a focal point. Once it comes together(a couple of months from now) I'll show y'all. Thanks, Jeremy
