    Weird stuff...

So, I was cleaning the filter on my new sump today (new tank been up for about 3 months now, not the first time I've cleaned filter thoguh ), and I've started getting a bunch of this stuff in my sump and overflow. I have a lot of the little white spongy stuff all in the overflow area too, on...

    Rebooting my 60g

Think I'm going to try and make the switch tonight, from the old 60g setup to the temporary 10g while I do the cleaning on the big tank. Hopefully I can knock it out quick enough so that they're not in the small tank for too long, and I'll be overly cautious with the water testing and changes...

    Rebooting my 60g

Been a long time since I've posted here, but I'm in need of some advice while I get my tank back up and running. Over the last year, my 60g reef tank has fallen to the wayside as my wife and I battled her [hr] cancer. Now that all the nasty stuff is done and we survived (first off, yeah!!!! )...

    "Dory" turned carnivore...

I have a decent sized Royal Blue Tang, along with two clowns and a lawnmower blenny. I've pretty much been using the "Emerald Entree" frozen food for the whole group for a while now since I switched from pellet/flake. I've tried algae and seaweed sheets for the tang, but she never even nips at...

    no puffer with any inverts

Learned this the hard way a year ago. Got a porcupine puffer to join "Nemo" and "Dory", and within 2 days he had eaten my entire cleaning crew. Was adopted off to another loving family after than...

    Who eats hair algae?

I've got a lawnmower blenny in there, he never developed the taste for it I guess. He's been in there for a while, and I've never had an algae problem before, so I guess he just got used to the other things in there to eat. Always had a running battle with cyano, and you'll see his little lip...

    Who eats hair algae?

I'm having a bit of an outbreak of hair algae, I think mainly as my cleaning crew's numbers have dwindled over time and I need to refresh. I have a smattering of blue leg, scarlet leg, and zebra hermits and a few snails. I know Emerald crabs like algae, any other critters have a good taste for...

    Blue Tang - vegitarian?

I usually do a half cube of the entree around 6pm, think they need more of a breakfast? Maybe I'll try a quarter of a Emerald Entree cube before I leave for work in the morning (no lights in the tank, think they'll mind eating in the dark? ) and clip in a bit of seaweed sheet too, leave the...

    Rock hitchhikers

Ok, nevermind, did a little research on hitchhikers and found they are harmless feather dusters. Just a little unnerved at the speed those suckers spread, there used to just be a few of them and they population went nuts in the last couple of months. Easily close to a hundred little feathers...

Replacing bulbs, forget which K needed - help!

I'm to the time where I need new MH bulbs, will probably replace the T5's as well while I'm at it. Problem is, I forget what K-rating I have currently in my MH bulbs (10K? 14K? 20K?) and would like some opinions or suggestions on what would be good for my critters. My current fixture is a 48"...

    Best skimmer under 500$

I love my Coralife Super Needle Wheel, up to 220g. Only have a 55g w/10g sump right now, but at least I don't have to upgrade the skimmer when I get a bigger tank. Got it on other recommendations from here, works very well at pulling an insane amount of crap out of the water.

    anyone use tap water?

I used tap water when I first started off, but had a couple of major blooms with it. Here in AZ, we have really hard water so a lot of conditioning is generally needed. I just run up to the store and us the RO dispenser up there to get my weekly water changes / evaporation replacement (also...

Do PC-T5-VHO-MH lose strength over time?

Grouper, depending on what you have in your tank (coral, inverts, fish only), you might be good just replacing the PC bulbs and same some cash. However, if you're like me and had a fish only tank and wanted to upgrade, going from PC to MH/T5 was the best thing I think I've ever done for my...

    Blue Tang - vegitarian?

This particular iteration of tank is about one year old now. I started with a 29G and had the two clowns and a coral beauty. From there I got tank-itis and got a taller 40G and added the hippo tang. I know, small tank for a hippo, which leads to the hippo tank in a 55G w/10gal sump. Added a...

    Blue Tang - vegitarian?

I have a nice Blue Tang (Dory) to go along with a couple of clowns (Marlin and Nemo to the kids) and a blennie. When I got Dory, she was a vegitarian, I thought. At least, she would graze at seaweed and algae sheets, and eat veggie parts of the frozen food I'd put in (Emerald Entree). She'd...

    Rock hitchhikers

It's been a while since I've posted, and I'd kind of let my tank go to hell for the last couple of months. Everyone's ok, but in the time that my tank maintenance slipped to minimum levels a lot of hitchhikers have come out that were not there 2 months ago. I doubt they were actually there...

    new to ordering fish online

I have now ordered several groups of stock from here (cleaning crew, puffer, more cleaning crew when the puffer had some of the crew over for a "midnight snack", and most recently some corals). The drip-method they give here works wonderfully, and the tying the knot in the tubing worked great...

    what is your stock list

My 55g, about 2 months old now (you'll tell by the names, my kids are all over this tank)Mated pair false percula clowns (female about 3.5", male about 2.5") - "Marlin and Nemo" to the kids 2 BTA's in marginal health (used to be one but split) Royal Blue Tang (about 4") - "Dory" Coral Beauty...

    Who ate my fire shrimp?

Thanks for the input. I'm wondering if he was behind the disappearance of a Peppermint shrimp I had for a couple of months a while back. He just vanished, never saw so much as a piece of shell from him. Also testing my water quality tonight and doing an unscheduled water change. I lost a...

    Who ate my fire shrimp?

Ok, we've got a murder mystery on our hands now. A few weeks ago, I got a porcupine puffer fish, not fully realizing the effect he was going to have on my crabs/shrimp/snails. After he ate a little more than half my cleaning crew, I was able to put him up for adoption and give him to a good...
