    Setting Up 180 Gallon

I just set up a 230 in the basement using cinder blocks. Most basements aren't level, they aren't supposed to be. They should be sloped to the floor drain. I was wracking my brain as to what to use for shims as I don't like wood. If the wood gets wet and does not dry properly it can rott and due...

    calcium drop-100 ppm in 24 hrs....wtf?!!???

When ever you have conflicting results between two tests taken within a short amount of time it is best to test again. The third test should tell you which one of the 1st two were closer to being right. It's Pretty hard for that much Calcium to disappear from a tank that fast, especially one...

    Tempature problem

You can float bags of ice in the tank, make sure they don't leak though. Others have froze plastic pop bottles filled with water and use them, the bags would do while you wait for the bottles to freeze. Make sure you leave room in the bottles for the water to expand.

    New 230 gal reef build

Alrighty then, here are some more detailed pics. Here is the cheato compartment, I just slapped it together to keep the cheato from sticking to my standpipe. I do like it though. It's 12" wide x 48" long x 7-8" deep. Here is a shot of the DIY hood I made from a plastic tool box lid. It...

    New 230 gal reef build

Thanks everyone :-) I appreciate the compliments. Time for a little update. Here is the sump room 90% complete. I am almost finsihed the stand cover, all that is left is some trim. What a pain in the arse this was! I made it using some unfinished hardwood flooring the previous owners of my...

    New 230 gal reef build

She is just one of those people with a huge heart that everybody loves. I don't think I know a single person that doesn't like her. I asked her to call her old boss to get me some pricing on all the pces I would need to build my own tank. I only wanted the front and sides made from starfire and...

    New 230 gal reef build

Well things didn't work out as I planned purchasing the used 230. LONG story short I ended up buying the used 230 with a couple scratches on it so I am using it as my sump. My wife contributed her share to the entire reef project for life by getting me all the glass I would need to build a new...

No No No..This topic not needed

I think the section is a great idea. Especially if the poster tries to summarize the topic of the thread in the title. Then a person can then scroll through the threads and see which posts are of importance to them, very handy. I know I would have liked something like this when I first started out.

Do Not take the word of any pet store owner/employee as fact, always research.

These people generally do not specialize in just fish so it is pretty much impossible for them to know EVERYTHING about all the animals they sell. When compared to a salt water enthusiast who spends all their spare time experimenting, researching, observing and designing different systems you...

    Don't trust salt mix levels

Don't rely your salt mix to provide the proper balance of trace elements. I spent months trying to get my parameters set before deciding to test my makeup water. Low and behold the parameters were not what my tank required. I ended up having to add calcium and magnesium to each batch of make up...

    electrocution fish all dead ???

I had one of my fans fall in my tank once, it was still turning when I got home. I lost very little livestock, everything was in shock for about a month or more though. I would guess the cold water did it. You could run a external heater, Hydor makes them. I had one and loved it. Now I run the 3...
