    Maybe Im thinking of this wrong but wouldnt the mud and junk get stuck in the impeller and ruin it? the sand/mud would be after the water is brought into the hob so it would never get close to it and it would just trikle the water back into the tank waterfall style.

    I have in a 40 gallon tank for over 1 1/2 yrs. 1 Cbs 1 fire shrimp 1 cleaner 1 monkey 2 pepermint Tons of LR and plenty of caves makes them all happy, only thing is that I really cant add a small fish or the CBS will go after it.
