You don't need to call yourself a dumbass. We were all in your position once, and it looks like you already have a good start. Your question on sand. The type of sand is really your choice, but the best stuff is the very small grainy type, like at the REAL ocean. Crushed coral and that works...

In my opinion, no smaller than a 20. It really restricts what you can put in a tank if you go smaller then that. Not to mention if a disease enters you tank it will spread like wildfire. Just my 2 cents.
