    Sump return line question

I have my outlet just below the water level, but just above the minimum overflow level. That way no more water can syphon back to the sump than would go via the overflow anyway.

Phytoplankton - do all corals consume it?

So there is really no point to adding the stuff then??

Phytoplankton - do all corals consume it?

...or just certain types? Want to make sure I'm not adding stuff I don't need to be adding to the tank.

Skimmers and Filter Socks in Reef Tanks

Ok thanks bang guy, sounds like shutting off the skimmer for awhile after adding phyto is in order... The stuff I'm currently adding is refrigerated, and supposedly 'live' (read dormant?) when added, but gets stunned (or killed?) by suddenly dumping it into warm water. I suppose the logic...

Skimmers and Filter Socks in Reef Tanks

Just a couple questions about using these... When adding anything to the water (phytoplankton, vitamins + amino-acids, etc.) should filter socks be removed and skimmers turned off for a few hours so the corals have a change to get those goodies? Just wondering if either of these devices has a...

    Macro Algae

Yes, I thought that could be a possibility. I'm guessing shipping live plants across borders might possibly be a problem though - especially somehing anybody anywhere might even think may be invasive.

    Macro Algae

Spoke to the manager at one of the better lfs around. Due to demand they're placing an order for chaeto with a supplier they don't normally deal with. So looks like I should get some. THEN open a chaeto store and get RICH!! (Ok, maybe not.) The staff at this same place looked at me like I was...

    Macro Algae

Thanks for the thought. Hopefully I can hook up with some hobbyists around here who've gotten hold of some. Bang guy's remarks regarding caulerpa are somewhat reassuring as well though - if I can't locate any chaeto I may yet go that route.

    Macro Algae

Very helpful replies, thanks folks. One other concern I have about having to prune regularly is vacations. I keep human intervention while I'm away to a minimum (that even goes for freshwater tanks). I don't have anyone knowledgeable enough to trust doing anything requiring experience &...

    Macro Algae

75g reef (been running for over a year now but still early in the coral stocking stage), I have a decent skimmer in the sump (Vetex Omega 150) and plenty of LR and base rock in the DT. I was thinking of adding some macro algae to my sump (with lighting) to further lower nitrates. The only macro...

    Snake's comeback - 55g mixed reef

Ah, so your house is not totally 'ok' per my previous assumption. Sorry about that. As you say, a future aquarium setup is not a priority at such times.

    Snake's comeback - 55g mixed reef

Wow that really sucks! At least your house is ok and your family unhurt by it (assuming the hospital has power). Good luck getting things back to normal.

    Snake's comeback - 55g mixed reef

Lol, you don't need to be entertaining or funny... that's what Chumlee and Jose type sidekicks are for (the producers' formula would of course require you have those as these shows are now stuffed with scripted 'humour' and personality conflicts). Anyhow, on to more serious matters... re the...

    Snake's comeback - 55g mixed reef

Anybody done a reality show about your line of work yet? Just a thought. (Think of the MONEY). Seeing some of the other occupations they make shows out of this one's a shoo-in! The guys who fix up cars and antiques for the Pawn Stars all got their own shows. Seems only fair the guy who stuffs...

Kickstarting stalled reef project - what fish would you add?

Flower, I feel your pain then on the bad lights! This was a Deep Blue LED fixture... got it at a boxing day sale - a rare impulse purchase . And on such a critical piece of equipment! (Doh!) The troubles started after the measly one year warranty expired - expensive lesson learned. How...

Kickstarting stalled reef project - what fish would you add?

I'm not too worried about jumpers. I purposely designed/built an open-top canopy of a trapezoidal shape. A fish would need to leap over a foot upwards to clear the top, and unless it aimed for the 5" opening that runs the length of the centre of the canopy (and missed the lights) it would just...

Kickstarting stalled reef project - what fish would you add?

Thanks for the suggestions folks. I had considered a wrasse of some type. The two fish I did lose in this tank were a red fire fish, and a carpenter's wrasse. I simply lost track of both and never saw them again. (The fire fish was the very first addition; The wrasse seemed to have gotten an...

Kickstarting stalled reef project - what fish would you add?

I had started putting together 75g a reef tank some time back... with everything set up and running though things kind of got put on hold for nearly a year. Nothing new has been added to the tank in that time. Not much in the way of corals in the tank presently - a torch-frogspawn thingy (looks...

    Foodshape's 1st Time SW Build

Long, long fast forward (over a year)... The tank has been in limbo for most of that interval due to life issues I won't get into here, but now it's time to pick it up again. I've at least done the bare minimum to keep it running and avoid a total crash, but this tank really needs some more...
