Florida aquacultured / maricultured live rock

This rock shipped from the Tampa area. The rock was planted in the early 90's and has grown out and become covered with lots of great life. This rock was recommended by GARF, who are all about responsible reef keeping. The aquaculture site is leased and licensed by FL. I won't step on SWF's...

Florida aquacultured / maricultured live rock

Spent a little (unplanned) time in Sheridan last fall. Truck broke down. Did some landscape work there a few years ago, too. Do you have any lfs there? If there's a good one, might be worth another pilgrimage!

    Air sponge and gorgonian

Just a few notes about the deep sea yellow gorgonian. They are fairly hard to keep healthy long term, they need regular feeding, because they are not photosynthetic. They may have problems with algae growing on them, so you can use a soft brush to clean it off if this happens. Try to put it...

Florida aquacultured / maricultured live rock

I will attempt some pics. later, but am on dial-up, so it's painful to do anything with pics. , and I should really be doing anything other than sitting here on the computer. I am in a small town, Columbus, 40 miles west of Billings.

Florida aquacultured / maricultured live rock

For those of you contemplating Florida aquacultured / maricultured live rock, I thought I'd share my experiences with it. In early December, I ordered in 90 lbs rock. The premium ran about 5.99 a lb., and cost about $150 to ship, and have to say I have never seen live rock like this. The best...

    Mantis Diary

Hi! Just happened to run across your post about Monty. So happy to hear that I gave him up for adoption to a great home. Now, here's the news, I have caught another mantis. Looks about the same as Monty, only slightly larger. Was way too close to my sexy shrimp - eek! Grabbed the rock out...

    Air sponge and gorgonian

What type of gorgonian? Watch it, if the flesh starts to fall off the skeleton, it won't make it. If the flesh remains intact, give it some time. If the polyps come out, it will be ok. I had a purple whip tough it out through a postal mishap in really cold weather, which amazingly survived...

banded coral shrimp vs. Emerald Crabs

I have a large CBS, and she never bothers the emerald crabs. I agree that it could be possible that you may have a mantis, as they will eat most any crab that wanders past. The tough thing about figuring out if you have a mantis is you don't usually see them.

    Lunar Wrasse Reef Safe?

If you want a wrasse, try the 6 line. Mine has proven to be reef safe, and provides plenty of action as you would expect from a wrasse. I also have a lunar in another tank, and I would not trust him in a reef. Good luck.

How do I acclimate these monsters?

Emerald crabs are algae eating machines that will also eat other food (leftovers, flake, pellet) if there is not enough algae. Unlike some creatures that depend only on algae, they won't starve once they have cleaned it up. They will clean mostly just the rock. You will want snails for...

    am i ready for inverts

I know its hard to be patient, but go slow. You should wait longer, until you get your water down to 0 nitrite. Nitrates of 20 would be really tough on most inverts, and can kill some. When you start adding critters, only add a few at a time. If you add too much at a time, your bacteria...

    Keeping Snails

    new cucumber

I have one that doesn't bury himself, stays on top. Then I have a couple that I watched immediatley bury themselves when I put them in the tank. I guess it all depends on what kind exactly.

    arrow crab

I have an arrow crab with 5 peppermint shrimp and a CBS. Never had a problem. (It is bigger than the shrimp) It hasn't ever picked at polyps or anything, except the one thing that it wouldn't leave alone is feather dusters. Mine will eat just about anything I give it. If it is full it will...

    Emerald Crab

I have several small emerald crabs. They don't seem to really fight much, at least not in a damaging way. They each sort of maintain a "territory" of their own. They will go to town on algae. They don't interact much with anything else (hermits, shrimp, snails, fish) they just focus on...

PDBFP - Pretty Darn Big Fuge Project

Having experience with ponds, I would say a mid-size submersible pond pump may do the trick for you. Lots of pond pump options out there, some being more efficient than others. Some online searching should lead you to some of the big pond companies, (nursery pro, little giant, for example) and...

    Crazy Little Worms!?!

It is a bristle worm. Don't worry, it is beneficial, eats detritis. Think of them like the earthworms in your garden, keeps substrate stirred. They also like to live in holes in live rock.

10 gallons big enough for a refugium?

Go for it. Any size fuge will help up your pod population, which is great for the tank. 10 gal is a decent size, considering the improvements people report even with small hang on ones.

    Do you need hermits?

Other alternatives for eating detritis would be brittle stars and sand sifting cucumbers. I like the activity the crabs provide, but they have been nasty at killing snails. They had plenty of empty shells to choose from, but they seem to enjoy some escargot every so often.
