I have the 72" and the ballasts barely get warm. I dont think they vent from the top. Ive got half of one across another ballasts and so far (5 months) no problems.

You can buy a 1/2 "cpvc compression joint. Remove one of the rubber washers and it will fit perfectly over most powerhead outputs. Now u can just insert it into a 1/2" pvc coupling or elbow and it will stay firmly in place and is easy to remove for cleaning.

I think I am going with a yellow gobie and shrimp pair. Softies and a few lps. I am just concerned about the gobie jumping.

What kind of power supply would you use for the pc fans?

Dont top off with salt water. Only the water evaporates. The salt stays in the tank. If you top off with salt water your specific gravity will continue to rise.
