How much does live sand cost? can you just buy regualr sand and you will have live sand after a month?

Which would you chose? I currently have gravel and I am thinking about switching to sand. Sand looks so much nicer too, but do I need a special filter if I have sand in my tank I just have a regular old fish filter similar to a biowheel. No bioballs

Hmm live rock sounds very expensive. I would need a special bulb to then right. Thats like $30 plus the light holder. I'm real short on money. So cost is very important to me.
