    What's under the hood?

Here's a fun thing.....let's all spill the beans about the equipment we're running? What's under the hood? Up the skirt? No, wait....scratch that last one. I've seen some of you in person; I don't want to know! Hope we get a few people chiming in: Post the size of the tank, what...

    So...what's your "secret?"

Let me start off by saying the obvious: I am no expert at this. I'm just a hobbyist. I learn new things about these tanks of ours all the time.....and for me, that whole process of discovery is a big part of the appeal. I love watching the hobby evolve both on a meta level as a group, and on...

Novahobbies' 37g column tank reset build

Going to be a slow build, but it was past time to do a reset on this tank. Let me give you some particulars: This tank has been for the longest time a seahorse tank for H. erectus horses. When it was time to move past the horses, we kept this tank with a pair of clowns and a few other fish...

    My 7g Office Nano

It's high time a tank came to sit on my office desk. This is a little 12 inch cube that I got from a friend of mine. It features a small DIY baffle in the back that takes up the back 2 inches of space. Filtration is an overflow in the back unit, with two Rio 260 lph pumps returning water back...

What happens when you look through a red filter at your blue actinic-lit tank??

THIS: No photoshop. Just old-fashioned camera filters. What's even worse..this coral is in sad shape. Can hardly imagine what it must look like when I get it healthy. But for those who want to try: Buy a pair of red goggles (usually found as protective eyewear for lasers) and look at your...

    Upside-down McCosker's wrasse....

I have a small McCosker's wrasse that I got a few weeks ago from a dealer. He is a young male, about 2-2.5 inches long, and he was acting and swimming fine when I picked him up. He went into my 20g QT tank, and was fine for about a week. However, he started swimming on his side a little....then...

    Unknown nudi??

Unknown Nudi I found gliding on my front glass today. Also seen here is an odd semicircular egg mass in the top portion of the cup. Unsure if the two are related. It's worth noting that the egg mass was found in a colony of clove polyps that ARE NOT looking well, although I can see nothing...

    MACNA 2013...who's going???

MACNA's getting closer...and tickets are starting to sell out!! So.....is anyone here a "for sure" Macna attendee? I admit I haven't purchased my ticket yet, but there's no question I'll be there for Sat and Sun. Michelle and I are thinking of doing a brunch thing on Sat AM for the SWF buddies...

Something we may see in LED fixtures in the future....

Saw this whilst searching for DIY LED fixtures: Polycarbonate Grade Can Replace Aluminum In LED Heat Sinks

    Crazy LED question

....is there any reason I couldn't use simple screen framing aluminum as my heat sink for a small number of LEDs? This would also be actively cooled by a venting fan blowing over it. I have access to that material fairly cheap here. Or am I nuts? Doesn't seem much different than the aluminum...

    jawfish and sleeper goby?

Has anyone ever kept a Jawfish and any sand-sifting Toby in the same tank? Say, with a 48" x 18" footprint?

Irritated with my Koralia EVO's....has anyone else had this problem?

OK, so I have a total of 4 Koralia Evos in my tank...two 1400s, and two 750s. They are plugged into an alternating timer so at any given moment, one 750 and one 1400 is running. A few months ago, the little center rubber "bumper" on the outlet screen broke off of one of the 750s. These little...

Any OTHER reasons for a salt-grain speck on a fish?

I've had a Potter's angel in QT for a couple weeks now. He's acclimating slowly, eating a little each day (and pooping, so he may also be picking off the new LR I put in this tank). But he's had this single white speck on his flank since I got him. Just one. At first I assumed ich, but held...

How to sterilize the QT post-ich outbreak

I had a PBT in QT who didn't make it through hypo. For unknown reasons, I had a nitrite spike in a 24 hour period that, despite a 50% WC, the poor girl didn't recover from. Now the fish is gone, the rock and decoration from the QT is thrown out, and I'm looking to sanitize the tank, filter...

So, I'm watching my mom's dog.......

A week or so ago my Mom-in-Law went to visit some family in Ohio. She asked (very nicely) if we would watch her yorkie for a month while she was away. "Sure," we said. What could go wrong? Now, I knew this dog wasn't really potty trained. When your owner is an older woman who.....let's face...

Video of Mandarins using a feeding dish

I came across this vid on my phone and thought you'd like to see it. It's a few months old, but still kinda cool. These are my two green Mandarins, a male and female pair, eating frozen PE mysis from the feeding dish I put in for my seahorses. The big male has recently passed on (I had him...

Need some advice for poor-skimming HOT overflow

Hey! I'm cleaning my seahorse tank today, and I'm getting frustrated with the hang-on-back overflow. It's a Tom Aquatics Rapids Pro filter, and the overflow portion has the return jet built into the overflow unit. This is nice for convenience, but I always wonder if the return jet isn't...

    ATM "Soft Frozen" Foods

Is anyone else using these? I've tried the mysis and the zooplankton, and I have to say I'm a fan. DESPITE the marketing with ATM....(still not a big fan of that show)....I think this is a solid product here. My fish and corals go NUTS over the zooplankton, which is compised of arctic...

Very weird thing I've never seen before...

I sucked this thing up from the seahorse tank today whilst cleaning. Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to save and photograph it, but here goes...maybe someone can recognize it by description: It was a short, smooth, fleshy tube, about 1.5 inches long and maybe 1/4 inch in diameter. I found...
