Leaving my wife in charge of the tank.

Comms. Aside from the wedding ceremony, will she be able to contact you while in Denver? Using Skype or an ip cam in addition to voice would help. As someone recommended, having a fellow reefer POC is good advice in case of emergency.. .especially if comms were limited.

physics/engineering question regarding refugium/sump flow rates

I do have an ATO (I should have proofread my original post) so the water level  fluctuations will be minimal. Ideally, I would prefer the skimmer to be discharged in the sock or refugium chamber but the discharge has to be located at or near the surface, thus limiting the water height in those...

physics/engineering question regarding refugium/sump flow rates

Thanks all. I was told by the precision marine bullet 2 manufacturer that the skimmer output is 400 gph so with the 700 gph net return, I would be ok, I think. I've considered the separate drain that bob eluded to but my skimmer requires in excess of 700 gph skimmer pump which the skimmer...

physics/engineering question regarding refugium/sump flow rates

Will the refugium flow rate be 300 gallons per hour in the illustrated setup? Also, will the return section be the section which water level lowers with evaporation thus requiring and ato? I think this will work and the refugium flow will somehow correlate with the skimmer net flow (400) and...

recommendation for a great reef aquarium reference book?

For solid basic aquarium info, it's hard to beat these: The Conscientious Marine Aquarium by Bob Fenner Advanced Marine Aquarium Techniques by Jay Hemdal Is there a particular subject within the hobby you're wondering about? Thanks, I'll look at these also. I'm focused on coral growth...

recommendation for a great reef aquarium reference book?

"The Coral Reef Aquarium" by Tony Vargas seems to be a pretty popular and recent book about the hobby. It has a lot of up to date information about new "dream tank" setups and what hobbyists do to maintain these setups. It's something I am interested in buying. I still feel like the three volume...

recommendation for a great reef aquarium reference book?

I just threw out my three outdated (10 - 15 year old) saltwater aquarium books and decided to get another, as a reference to supplement info available online. Does anyone have any suggestions on a useful book?

    Jebao WP 40

I just ordered the updated controller but haven't received it yet. I played around with mine until I got the flow I wanted on W2, which was suggested by someone i know that has the same tank I do. I also put mine on low speed at night. What size tank do you have? I guess I'll have to do some...

    Jebao WP 40

Received my wp40 last week and my 12v-24v power adapter yesterday. I am considering placing it in my 55 and reducing the flow via the adapter until my 90 gets setup later this month. Does anyone have any better instructions for the revised WP40 controller (pic below)? I remember running...

8.02 pH in morning and 8.56 pH at night

I dose the alkalinity about once every couple of weeks. Ca, about twice a week. I've just read some informative water chemistry articles in another forum, leading me to believe that factors such as my high Mg (and other trace elements) and CO2 levels are influencing the rate of Carbonate...

8.02 pH in morning and 8.56 pH at night

I kept Ca at around 450 to 480 based on my API test kit recommendations. I just ran a full range of tests this morning 0930-1000. Ca is 500 per API and Red Sea (titration). pH is 8.0 per API and reefkeeper probe. Mg is 1600 and KH is 11.2 both per Red Sea. My lights just turned on. I'll test...

8.02 pH in morning and 8.56 pH at night

I only dose (drip line) with alkalinity occasionally when alkalinity readings are low, probably monthly. I'm using purpleup or just Ca mostly to sustain Ca levels. I plan on dosing a ml or two at night when I get my two dosing pumps. I measure my alkalinity every couple of weeks and it seems to...

8.02 pH in morning and 8.56 pH at night

Ca is 480-500. Salinity is 1.024-25. Haven't tested Alkalinity in a whilesince it was consistent with pH readings. Haven't checked Mg in a while. Does it effect pH?

8.02 pH in morning and 8.56 pH at night

Does anyone else have extreme pH ranges dependent on time of day? I am considering dosing my tank at around 11ish (at night) as the pH starts to drop, concluding at around 10ish in the morning as it starts to rise again. I'm worried that the upper value would go above 8.56 though. Does anyone...

Is this an optimum return setup for a 90 gallon?

The plumbing was professionally done a few years ago by a saltwater tank business just north of Seattle. I may make the drive up there to see their products and discuss this setup. . .perhaps see some examples of such setups. Not sure how well it worked for the previous owner as the system was...

    Evil Black Sand

That's good things got back to normal. Although I've never heard of black sand, I've heard of black "mud" for refugiums that's to be layered beneath a layer of sand. Did you use that perhaps?

Is this an optimum return setup for a 90 gallon?

Focusing on the flow rate, I never even considered the real possibility of sand/detritus getting sucked up into the return line. Perhaps this setup initially had a canister filter vice sump which would have negated a reverse siphon threat. I'll modify this by plugging the hole below, removing...

Is this an optimum return setup for a 90 gallon?

My pictures were previously uploaded incorrectly. I think I will go with my first option to see what the flow rate will be and make a decision at that point whether or not to change the plumbing. I will have my wp40 and possibly my koralia and tunze if needed for internal flow. I am just...
