    Looking pretty good.

I haven't done a water change in at least 5 years, and only have a Fluval 404 canister filter

tap tap tap tap waiting for the pics... tap tap tap tap tap... You know, I agree with you that once a tank matures - then let it be. I had a BEAUTIFUL 55g saltwater tank with a 6" deep sandbed that I hadn't done a water change on in two years and the corals were THRIVING! so I know what you are...

    55g cleaner crew

I also don't like those pre-packaged deals. There's usually way too many snails and hermits. Almost half or more die soon after you put them in the tank. Like they said, as your tank matures, add more of your clean up crew. I personally like the burrowing clams... and they don't hurt anything...

    Salinity Levels

+3 Salt doesn't evaporate. Only the water does. You match your salinity in your tank to your freshly mixed saltwater for water changes and always top off with Fresh RO/DI water. I preferably top off with fresh kalkwasser mix... but that's another story :D

    Is this good algae?

Well, it's a Rhodophyta of sorts. I don't think it's the grape kind. If it starts to take over then it's too invasive. pull it out or quarantine the rocks. It might be from the kelp family.

    30 gallon stocking

I never had a problemw ith a coral beauty eating my mushrooms or damaging them. On the other hand, I've only had a couple of coral beauties. I've heard that some are aggressive towards corals while others could care less. You just have to chance it.

    30 gallon stocking

I wouldn't do the two six line wrasses either. To be honest, I think a 30g is just a little too small for a six line wrasse. A 55g or larger is better. Wrasse need a lot of room to swim and graze. Did you ever look out at your hermit to see what it was? Just curious. lol

    how many fish?

Eh, I agree with BTLD, that tang can not stay in there long term.

Sounds pretty good. But also, remember that even if you got a good deal, remember to do your research before you purchase and make sure you have the proper equipment to take care of your new pets. :D (Just advice for other novices! )

    10gal nano start

Welcome to nano tanks! Looks like you are getting a pretty good start. They make a small CFL fixture for small tanks like that on the internet that do very well with nano reefs. I'm in the process of setting up my little 20g with a 10g sump as well. I'm gona be getting that little fixture for my...

    Live sand question(s)....

Eh, go shallow sand bed. Save money and buy some dry sand. 1 1/2" to 2" is best. Barebottom tanks end up being more trouble then they are worth to a novice. For one, you have to have a lot of water flow and second, you have to use a combination of heavy protein skimming and a refugium to absorb...

The Dude's 20g Reef tank Journal

No, a 20g tank I think has a tempered bottom. Besides, I haven't had any problems with external overflows so far. Alright. So, last night I officially ordered the external overflow and the Rio 1100 sump pump. YAY!! Now I can set it up and put some water in it and get the system running. Next...

The Dude's 20g Reef tank Journal

Isn't it amazing that not many people comment on your journal if you know what you are doing or have too small of a tank to do anything "serious" with? I'LL SHOW YOU! So, I am re-thinking my lighting idea. I want to have some plating montipora and a couple of other high light organisms like a...

Is a 55g going to be too unstable?

Any tank is what YOU make it. I'm perfectly happy with a 20g saltwater tank. I used to have six 55g saltwater tanks, a 90g show and a 240g reef tank all running at the same time - and I tell yah, the tank is what YOU make it. A 55g is great, but remember - the bigger the tank, the more it costs...

need some help, opinions, thoughts whatever is good lol...

What's your salinity? Do you have a hydrometer? It's supposed to be around 1.024 to 1.026. What do you use for top off water? Are you using dechlorinated tap water or are you buying or making your own RO/DI water? If your using tap, your most likely adding nitrate and phosphate to the tank every...

The Dude's 20g Reef tank Journal

So, I called a contractor and he wants to charge me $100 for 30 minutes of work and $20 worth of supplies. I DON'T THINK SO! So, I'm going to do it myself. I've decided that I'm going to hammer in a piece of rebar into the ground and wrap a copper wire around it and secure it. Then I'm running...
