Tronic is supposed to be the best brand there is. It is the only brand that uses an electronic (hence the name) thermostat instead of the unreliable bimetal strip that other companies use. And they cost only about 24 bucks at www.petsolutions.com and the darn LFS wants 39 for them...of course.

    3 totaly different ???s

I really don't recommend a mandarin goby because of their food habits. If you absolutely have to have one, get a big old tank and wait until there's lots of copepods and such for it to gulp down. Otherwise it will die in a few months or less.

GREEN Hair in my tank - OHHHHHH NO!!!!

I think a coral beauty would probably make a good "algae cow". I will have one anyway. They also leave corals alone, unlike some other dwarf angels.

    one month to go......arrrrgggh!

I believe I can do this. I hope I can. Nasty surprises like ick outbreaks and algae problems seem pretty common, so I'll do my best to keep the water quality very good and add fish slowly.

    one month to go......arrrrgggh!

I still have to wait a month before I can buy my 70 gallon tank. My parents won't let me buy it until we move into our nearly-completed huge house. I can understand that because it would be a pain in the a** to move a big old tank like that. It's tough to be patient when you've waited, studied...

    METAL HALIDE BULBS

The 14K bulbs are bluer than the 12K. I would use the 14K if I chose MH, simply because I've seen tanks with these bulbs and loved the way it looked and the incredible displays they encourage. MH is the best, no doubt about it. Unfortunately, it's also tough on the wallet and heats up tanks.

    Bad news and Good news

You could get a cute coral beauty. Very few coral beauties (1 in 100) will pick at corals. They are also fairly hardy. So cute too. I will set up a 70 in a month and will definitely get a beauty when the tank is matured and some of the fish are in there.

    What do they eat?

I think they eat fish food, but I'm not sure what else.

    Which skimmer for a 70???

I've heard many sites and people say that the HOT-1 is a lot more efficient than the berlin. Who can tell me more about the remora and remora pro?

    Remora vs. HOT-1 skimmer

The HOT-1 is made by Precision Marine. I saw one at a LFS once and it's a tough little skimmer. Thick acrylic on that baby. It comes with a Rio 800. The remora pro comes with a bigger rio, an 1100 I think, which has about twice as much oomph. Both cost about the same.

    Remora vs. HOT-1 skimmer

Well, I've heard good stuff about both. I am willing to shell out some money for a skimmer when I set up my tank in about a month. A sump is something I don't want to mess with on my first marine tank. I want a powerful skimmer that can make "old motor oil". This will be a 70 gallon tank. I...

Can someone tell me which skimmer to choose? I will also post a "Remora vs. HOT-1" topic.

    where is everybody??

There are a lot of questions about skimmers and lighting. It would be a great idea if we had a separate forum for those, and have other equipment in there too.

    where is everybody??

It seems like a lot of the smartest people on this board are gone. I used to get considerably more replies to my questions. I think this place is not well known enough to attract more hobbyists. I think we could also have a couple more categories, like one for equipment and one for new links and...

Don, that's a nice tank. What kind of lighting do you use?

    Lighting and stuff

Lights of America makes this circular bulb with a removable ballast intended for home use. You can buy it for about 15 bucks, unhook the circular 30W compact, and put a 27w quad or 28w regular bulb on it. I would use 2 6700K and one 7100K. This is pretty darn cheap.

    8800K and 10K PC bulbs??

The CSL people have recently developed a 8800K and a 10K tube. Would it be possible to have a successful reef tank with just the 10K, or should I stick to the 67/71 combo? I will use a 4x96 over a 70. I think it would be simpler to just get one type of bulb.

    Which skimmer for a 70???

Which is best for a 70, the regular Remora, Remora Pro, or the Precision Marine HOT-1??? The Pro and the HOT-1 both cost about $180 but I want to know which is better. Has anyone used them both? The Remoras have a "spray induction system" but I don't think they are waste collector compatible, as...
