Pull the distributor cap and check to see if the rotor is tight. I had mine come loose on my integra. But yeah, it could be dist. cap, rotor, coil, etc.
If the rpm kept going up it's not the timing belt. The engine would stop immediately. Anyway, last time I had one changed it was around $500.
From your description I would guess something in the ignition system went out.
Looks like a red mithrax. I have at least 3 in my tank. They came on GV rock and just graze on algae. One of mine has gotten up to a few inches across.
Green star polyps? They will close up for a few days every now and then for no apparent reason. Calcium at 550 shouldn't be a problem unless your kH is out of whack too.

Thanks. I was around when these guys were the bug of the week, and that one stuck in my head. :) No, mine didn't seem to be predatory. It would root around in the sand bed.
I have read it can take 8 months for them to starve. I had a few small ones in my tank that disappeared, and never bothered my fish. The large one I had in the pic never tried to get any fish, it seemed to be a scavenger but I removed it anyway. FWIW not all of them are predatory, but some...
