1 legged sandsifter starfish

i've had this sandsifter for over a year. no new tank mates. recently he has lost all but 1 leg. do starfish molt their legs or something? any ideas? thanks.

from what I have read, they regrow legs that are lost, maybe something is eating it?

when i tried to keep one during vacation once it's legs started detereoriating and i had to throw him back. suspect it was due to bad water quality. could be same thing.
stars shouldn't look thazt many legs even if there cloning..
