Hi, I have a 10 gal as well. My tank has a Aqua Clear Filter that looks like the one pictured above. It has the sponge, charcoal and room for the ammonia remover bag as well.
My tank consits of:
Fine crushed coral bed
4 lbs of live rock with more to come
2 green chromis
1 hi fin red banded goby
1 blue legged hermit crab
1 camel shrimp
1 turbo snail
So far so good, beginners luck I call it. Everything is going very well and the fish are very happy and healthy.
I do 10% weekly water changes faithfully
I also have a 25 gal freshwater tank, not ready to turn that into salt, buy maybe one day
I have had freshwater fish for over 20 years, salt aquariums is new to me. This is an excellent forum, take the time to read all the posts. Lots of great help and wonderful people here to help as well.
Good Luck :happyfish

Check out my thread on my 10 gallon here . I have modified my Aquaclear to pump up the the refugium, while using no mechanical filtration inside the HOB. There's plenty of info in the thread. Cheers to all 10 galloners...

Absolutley amazing and very beautiful
Can you tell me if any of that stuff came or grew on you live rock?
My 10 is along ways away from that, but in time it will look nice too. Everything here is so darn expensive. Bringing anything in from the USA costs us Canadians an arm and a leg with the exchange. There are retailers in other cities that will ship here but then again the cost is the same as if I were to buy it here already.
So patience is needed on my part, I only have 4 pounds of live rock at the moment but will be adding more as I can.
What fish and critters do you have in that tank?
Very nice display :happyfish

If there was one word of advice in this hobby only it would probably be patience. There are many things that will come alive from live rock after a while, while many specimens need to be added.
A list of everything in my nano would be long, but most of the specimens were frags from buddie's and other tanks, with the best price of all. My best advice is to hook up with local reefers and look for frags.
It takes a while, and if it were easy this hobby wouldn't be what it is.
A good compliment to this board is www.nano-reef.com which is a site loaded with nano specific info. I'm Brooklyn Johnny over there too.
Hope that helps...

i have a penguin mini hob filter on one side of my 10 gallon, and on the other side i have a hob refugium (custom made) driven by an aquaglobe 200 power head. having the current on both sides of tank gives just enough to keep everything happy.

This is to Johnny B. How do you keep your glass so clean? It looks spotless in the pic. Did you give it a good scrapping right before the pics, or do you have a really good cleaner crew, or is it the refugium? I have a 20 Gallon, with a refugium, but i still have to scrape algea like ever three days. Oh well, thanks for any help

JM it's a little bit of everything. Our tanks should look like you're looking into the ocean, and keeping the glass clean helps us realize that more easily. The more often you clean the easier it is. I run the magnet over every couple of days, and once in a while get the scraper out for the coralline. Thanks for the compliment...

Yup, snails do help quite a lot, I have one redfooted moon snail and a couple margarita snails in one of my tanks, and the redfoot does a really good job of keeping the front pane clean, and the margaritas do and excellent job of stripping algae from my liverocks.
Unfotunately, I still have to run the acrylic brush over the tank from time to time to keep it really clean, and do run the magnet cleaner over my 2 JBJ glass tanks to help keep them looking their best.
