12 Gallon Cube Masters... Junk?

A buddy gave me a one without any lights. I have rigged up a little 27 watt fixture and ballast which will do just fine (no corals, just a home for a clown that is getting beat up on). Free is Free but he was ready to throw it out a window because of losing the lights twice. Has anyone else had issue with these or is this one just a sad case? I am looking at another one for a small smithii and if so what is the better brand?

I had a cube master for 7 months....biggest piece of crap I ever owned! You can get the hood replaced, but the same thing will happen again. I had my hood replaced 3 times. the fourth time my lights went out I had to wait 5 days and my coral wasn't doing great, so my lfs gave me a full refund and I bought a biocube...The lights also got really week fast. if your not going to keep coral then you should be fine...hey it's free!
