no, live rocks dont need lights. u will only need light in the back chamber if u hv macroalgae like cheato. the live rocks in the back will simply add more surface area for beneficial bacteria and pods to grow. just make sure u replace the floss every 2 weeks to prevent detritus buildup.

1. Dump the balls and just use the LR.
2. Make sure the LR is bagged so you can take it out monthly and vacuum the back compartments. You'd be amazed how much detritus ends up back there.
3. Keep the carbon. Pulls a lot out that the sponge/floss misses.
I have 1 of the sponges, the carbon, and LR in the first chamber, more LR and chaeto in the 2nd, and my heater in the third. The chaeto's been in about a month, and I'm seeing a huge difference in filtration.

Any 10 or 20 Watt Quartz Halogen table-top lamp will do. I bought a 20 Watt, and its a little much, so I have it 8 - 10 inches away from the glass.
The key is to run the chaeto light when the tank lights are off. THere's 2 reasons for this:
1. It keeps the oxygen up and the carbon dioxide down in the tank.
2. It keeps your water temp steady.

3. it reduces the PH swing caused by less lighting on the tank
