Ditch the sand. Go barebottom. Add some starboard to the bottom of the tank, throw in all your powerheads and your ready to rock!
Sand does nothing but make it have a natural look and gives a place for some critters to hide. Sand gets dirty and has to be maintained. It does not buffer the water.
Then again, it's a personal choice. :)

Place one powerhead on each side of the tank that points across the surface of the water. One will point towards the front glass, the other points a the back glass. Then, the lower flow powerheads you point one behind the rocks on the right side and point the other powerhead going in front of the rocks on the other side of the aquarium. Try to keep the flow from blowing across the sand on either side, but make sure enough detritus gets kicked up to ensure there are no dead spots. That's basically the jist of it.
