i started my reef tank in the spring. I found a 125 w/ beautiful cabinet; 2 cannisters, python(the long one), heaters ....for 150 bucks. I knew it wasnt getting set up the next day(no money) so Id do it alittle at a time. I have the sand, coral decos 2 pieces of live rock from along time ago(been dry for awhile). I have flourescents 10000k 2 36" and 2 36" actinics. Not enough for inverts and corals but it will sustain fowlr. i need salt, test kit, and lr right now. Heres my question. Water displacement... If i have 120 lbs of sand, and the coral in the tank; I no longer have 125 gallons of water. Now if i put 100 lbs of lr in the tank; Ill have even less water. Soooo how much water displacement is there and what would be a safe amount of rock to put in if there isnt 125 gallons of water in there? I want to cycle the tank w/ the rock in it and be done w/ it.

I shoot for 1.5 lbs of rock per gallon. So Id say lower the water to like 3/4 filled, add the rock, and fill up the rest of the gap til the tank is full (if there is one). The die-off from the rocks will trigger the cycle.

I agree with paintballer. Also, I was wondering about the title of your thread? Did I miss something?
Same here, I was expecting to see a 125 with just a sand bed, Barbie, Ken and maybe Skipper lounging pool-side......

in senoia Ga there is an older couple that have a 6x6 sand lay out in front of thier house with barbie dolls set up like they're playing vollyball; tanning; etc... on memorial day they cover the sand w/ astro turf and put up little crosses in rows like a cemetary; then they return it to the barbie beach seen. My title stemmed from that because I have a 125 with sand and coral decorations because I dont have the money right now to complete the reef. so for the time being; it's my barbie beach (w/o the barbies; my daughter wont let me put hers on my beach).
