what type of transformer do I need to run 3 small 12v fans? I have some laying around the house and am thinking of putting them to use inside my canopy.

I would think the type of transformer that runs electric model trains would be
acceptable.

I got one from Radio Shack. It was a 12VDC 1500mA to operate 2 120mm fans for my canopy. It was around $25. They had 500mA but said that it probably wouldnt operate 2 fans that big.

I looked on their site and didnt have anything. the only one I saw was for a circuit board. the fans are pretty small. maybe between 1.5 and 2". dont know if they will do me any good.

You need to look at the current rating on the fans. Depending on the speed and airflow and the fan design, a 2" fan can pull anywhere from 100ma (1/10 of an amp) to over an 1000ma each.
Almost every fan on earth has the voltage and current rating stamped on the label.
Then, all you need to do is get a power supply of equal voltage (or slightly less if you want the fans to run a bit slower and much quieter), and equal or greater current rating than the sum of all the fans added up.
Jameco has a wide selection of power supplies. If you've got a goodwill store near you, they almost always have a whole bin of power supplies for like a buck each. I go there every couple months and restock my power supply bin.
If you post the voltage and current rating of the fans, I can help you find a power supply through Jameco.

Those are pretty low-power fans. That is 160ma each, so 3 fans would draw no more than about 500ma.
Jameco (use google) PN for one that will work is 114825. You can then just splice it onto your fans, the striped lead is positive. After shipping, it may cost you enough though that you can find one at Radio Shaft for less.
Or the goodwill route.
Anything rated 12v DC, with a current equal to or greater than 500ma should do the trick. SOme power supplies are rated in amps, 1 amp = 1000ma. Just hack the plug off and attach.

forgive my drawing, but does this look good for the wiring?
black for ground and red for pos.
