i turn them on when i leave for work at 630 thats when it gets light here then shut them down at 830 or so..

That is a reasonable light cycle, but a light timer is probably a good idea to keep it consistent and keep it from slipping your mind one night.

You don't have to turn the lights on to match natural daylight. Get timers and turn them on to match your schedule. I have mine go on around 3 in the afternnoon, so I can enjoy my tank in the evening after work. The the timers go off around 11 at night.

i have mine on timers from 10 til 8pm
