Both my ballast state they run both 150w and 175w bulbs. I am currently running 150w bulbs. Its about time to replace them so I was going to replace them with 175w bulbs... The bases I have are hqi.... do the 150w and 175w bulbs use the same size base?

150w have double ended sockets (unless you have a seldom used s.c.r.e.w. in medium based bulb), 175w have mogul based s.c.r.e.w. in sockets.
moderaters. its rediculous you cant type the word s.c.r.e.w. , even if it were used negatively its still the cleaner way to say you know what. I've needed to use the word about five times and not once as slang. this is the equipment and DIY forum after all.

Well, my friend, some of the mods are on a power trip. Thank you for responding. The type of base you are speaking of os a "mogal" base.

Well, it looks like I'll be sticking to my hqi bulbs.... From what I've read the 150w hqi bulbs are comparable to/or put out as much or more light that 250 mogul base bulbs?

not true at all. there is virtually no performance difference between SE and DE of the same wattage (250w mogul bulbs perform like a 250w double ended bulb). In fact Single ended bulbs using the same ballast usually perform marginally better because the mandatory UV sheilding on double ended bulbs block a significant amount of light. mogul bulbs dont require UV shielding. I think that myth comes from the fact that HQI ballast perform significantly better than other forms of ballast (electronic, pulse and probe start ballast) and people use the terms double ended and HQI interchangeable which they really arent. HQI denotes a ballast type not double ended bulbs. there are single ended and double ended bulbs that are HQI bulbs (meaning designed specifically to burn properly and perform best on HQI ballast) and single and double ended bulbs that arent HQI bulbs (double ended bulbs made specifically to burn correctly and perform best on electronic ballast. single ended bulbs designed to burn properly on pulse, probe and/or electronic ballast).
whatever the case more than likely the electronic ballast just drives 175w bulbs to spec and overdrives the 150w bulbs (which a true HQI ballast would do anyway) so there wont be much to gain by going from 150w to 175w on the same ballast other than removal of the required glass sheilding.

I agree with this...

... and this. The ballast isn't "aware" of what kind of lamp is installed or it's wattage. Since the ballast is responsible for regulating the current flow through the lamp, the same ballast used with a 150 or 175w lamp is not going to produce any demonstrable difference. IMO it's not worth the expense of changing over to an SE system just to use 175w lamps.
... and by the way, Pumper... it's not the mods fault. They don't set the filters, that's a setting in vBulletin that is controlled by Admin (saltwaterfish.com). The mods may be able to suggest to Admin that they change their filter policy, but it's up to Admin as to whether or not it gets done.
I myself have asked the mods on numerous occasions to see if they could get them to remove that particular word from the filter. I don't think Admin wants to.
