i plan on move two 10 gal tanks into a 55 gal tank. One 10 has a heater, power head and a small filter, all i have in there is live rock that has been established for about four years. The other tank has live rock, cc, and a striped damsel. that has been runing four about one year know. The questions i have is What items do you recomend! I am quite new at salt water tanks! Help me build this 55 gal tank! sould i start with more of a fish only tank? then become a reef tank? what item do i need for fish only tank? can i add to those items to make it a reef tank? Help me build my tank!!

get a bigger filter, then a skimmer, and do some research on lighting options that will fit your budget. start with a fish only and SLOWLY work it into a reef. since you kept marine fish already you have the basic understanding and you will find a 55g much easier to care for.

I have 55 gallon reef tank with appx 65 lbs live rock and 4 inch sand bed. I have no biofiltration. The live rock and sand are the filter. I would not wate my money on a wet/dry filter. It would be better spent on live rock. I have a small canister filter that I use to filter stuff out of the water if I need to or to run some carbon. You definitly need a good skimmer to supplement the live rock and the sand.

I do suggest a sump if you have the room for it. You can make one out of anything that will hold water. The yare good for hiding things like your heater and skimmer and they are good for adding water to your tank. Sorry about the choppiness of the above post.

Unless you got the money to start of with a good bit of live rock and a deep sand bed)dsb). Then your going to need a filter.Fish is a good place to start if your new to reefs.Lighting is really important and cost money.Skimmers are great and I also suggest one.Take your time and read,ALOT.
