As mentioned before, I have a 10 gallon tank with 10 lbs of live rock and l.s. I have a brittle star, peppermint shrimp, and some crabs. I want to put two fish in the tank. I'm thinking of a mandarin goby and a clownfish. I don't have any coral in the tank, yet.
Your thoughts would be appreciated

I'm no expert, but that sounds a bit heavy on the bioload.
Perhaps you could get away with one, but again, wait for more responses before making any decisions.

I would say no on the mandarin...thay look great but they need copopods...they come with lots of live rock. Some are known to eat other things but all in all it is a safe bet to stay away from them unless you have a lot of live rock and a well established tank. Chromis, clowns, small gobies, that is what I would stick with. Don't go overboard though. Good luck :)

i would stick with the clown but nix the mandarin they are very hard to keep.most of them starve to death because of not enough pods. they need a "lot" of lr and a well established tank since they will descimate a pod population.

You probably don't want to hear this, but I would not recommend the 10 gallon salt set-up. Its alot of bio over-load on such a small tank. I actaully tried it myself for a little while and it was ok for a few months but the tank could'nt take the bio. It can be done but it will take a few extra bucks to have a good filtration set-up for it, for the money you may as well get a bigger tank and play it safe?

So far... everyone is pretty much dead on... the 10g tank will be tough to do... especially if your a beginner. Smaller tanks give less room for error. I would also pass on the mandarin for the reasons mentioned above. A clown would work well as long as it's one of the smaller clown species... a perc might be a good choice. If you want to add a second fish... consider a jawfish. There is a 10g eclipse tank setup at my LFS with a perc, blue-spotted jawfish, and some shrooms - a good looking setup.
