2 yellow tang

I currently have a yellow tang in a 29 gallon - I am upgrading to a 75 gallon. Would another yellow tang be ok? Heres the deal. My friend is getting rid of his 29 gallon salt tank and he has a yellow tang in there but I am mainly buying it for the Live Rock. Would 2 tangs in a 75 be ok - they are about the same size

you shouldn't even have a yellow tang in a 75, they needa 90 or higher. tell your friend to get rid of his.

They would be very likely to fight. Many people will argue that a 75g is insufficient even for a single tank. I'll say it is OK for a short while - perhaps a couple of years. But 2 is not a good idea at all, IMO

Tell you what - I dont know what your talking about but according to [EDIT: LINK VIOLATION] it says this about a yellow tang. "Minimum Tank Size: 50 gallons" So this fish should thrive in a 75 gallon. Right now I have a yellow tang in a 29 gallon and he is doing very well but I would like to see him alittle happier in a 75. Tangs do not need a 90 gallon or higher aquarium. My 2 cents.

I agree. 2 would not be good. Its either 1 or 3 or more. Thanks for the advice
75 will be great plenty for a yellow tang.

I don't feel it is "plenty" for a yellow tang. I feel it is OK for a couple of years at most, for a single yellow tang - no way no how more than that (not just because of aggression either), but not a suitable long term tank. A 6' tank is most desirable for this type of tang for longer term.
Keep in mind also that most sites/stores are selling fish, and they WANT YOU TO BUY THEM. So almost any tank is A-OK with them. Neither Guineawhop nor I, nor most other people who feel this way, are trying to sell you something, just trying to help you out from research and experience. That's all these boards are about. They are great places to get advice, and potentially avoid costly mistakes.

I have to agree with the above posters, reason being that tangs are fast open water swimmers and not reef dwellers with the need for full throttle acceleration every so often. A 4 foot tank just does not provide the horizontal space to allow this instinct which in time will cause major stress usually resulting in disease or death. This is one of the main reasons that tangs have a poor long term survival rate (some people think that a few years of housing a tang is proof of success but alas a few years is not much with a fish that can potentually live for well over 50 years) IMO a Kole Tang or possibly a Scopas would be the only choice for a smaller tank as they are reef dwellers and do not require the horizontal swimming space that other species need. I agree that you could get away with one for a year or possibly 2 but anything longer than that would be quite an inconsidereate choice.....JMO :)

Yellow tangs need 75gallons or more a 90 is alot and I dont think they need that mutch. It basically comes to swimming room if the 75 is crammed with alot of rocks then yeah it might be to small but if it isnt then it should be fine "for one" I do think 2 will cause problems.

Well I have a 75 gallon stand almost done and a 75 gallon tank on order. Like it or not the tang will be in a 75 gallon tank with plenty room to swim.

The 75 is not a sufficient tank for the tang to stay in. Like ophiura said, the tang will be okay in that tank for a few years at the most. He will eventually need to move into a larger tank. A 50 gallon tank is way too small for a yellow tang. Have you ever seen a full grown yellow tang before? They are huge. But I guess you are one of those people who just hope to see a fish live for a couple of years and that will make you happy. Well fish live a lot longer than a couple of years, and when people finally start to get this into their heads, they will stop being so ignorant with how many and what types of fish they are putting in their tanks.

Ok call the tang police on me. Does anyone else house a Yellow Tang in a 75 gallon? I'd like to hear how they do. Thanks for any replies

Thank you for your reply. Right now I have a yellow tang (purchased as half dollar size) in my 29 gallon. He seems to be fine. I would like more room for him to swim so I am upgrading to a 75 gallon. Seem fair. I think so. Although it may not be like living in a mansion for him or in the ocean its a start. I would like to see how many people are housing a yellow tang in something less or equal to 75 gallons. I bet we find very many.
Also I am not gonna overcrowd the tank with Rock - The Tang will have room to swim and be happy.

You'll find lots. You can probably find plenty of people who have them in 10g. Its not really the point. Thousands of wrongs don't make a right.
I am relatively anti-tang police...I don't believe in the "no way no how in any case" scenario. But I do believe that as the fish grows, it will need a larger tank. Some months in the 29g, perhaps a couple of years in the 75g, and on to a six foot tank after that. Using your own logic, this should make sense. The same reason you want to give it more room from the 29g into the 75g while apply in the future. Hopefully at that time you will again upgrade tanks

So here is the answer I come up with. NO Tank is big enough for a Yellow Tang. They are reef dwellers and like room to swim. So why do people think a 90 gallon is big enough. A 75 gallon is 15 gallons less than a 90. Big deal.
Sparks are flying. There is much dilemma on this. Nobodys right unless you think they should only be in the ocean.
Lets stop arguing or is it just me. We all show interest in the same thing but we may not all agree.
