i use a 12gallon wetdry with built in skimmer for my 20L, a 300gph overflow with a mag3 return pump.
here is a pic of when i first set it up a few months ago.
and i didnt leave that blue filter media in there long that was only because i had just put my rocks in recently and i had stired everything up so i left it in there untill my tank was nice a clean.

and here is a somewhat more recent picture. I really need to update my pics on my tanks lol

thanks man! i went on some other site and they said I needed a filter that rolled 200 (10 per gallon) per hour but i see ur using a 300... if i did a fish only w.lr do u think i would still need a skimmer if i put a 300 roll over and 2 power heads?

you wont NEED a skimmer but imo a skimmer is better then any other type of filter you can buy. along with that mag 3 i also have a maxi jet 1200 in there and i think thats another 265 ish gph.

yerboy, nice Jack Daniels bottle
haha. Your tank is lookin good.
FLBOYINOHIO, just make sure the gallon per hour on the filter is sufficient to cycle the whole gallonage of the tank a few times an hour. Fish are messier than corals, a skimmer can only help, but if you do water changes weekly like nycbob said, you dont really need one. Skimmers arent too much money, so Id say just get one to help

I am currently in the process of setting up a 20 long also. So far I have the CPR Hang on back Aquafuge (Large) 25 1/2X12X4 and also have the tank drilled to allow flow into a 10gal tank underneath that holds an Excalibur Skimmer capable of skimming 150gal. for lights I have the 30in Sunpod with 150watt HQI and 12 moonlights. Hope this information helps. This might be extreme for some but I am trying to keep mostly SPS corals.
