24 Gallon Nano?

I have a 24 dx nano cube and it looks great... its just empty. I need opinions on what do to. So far I have been told that i can mix the salt and water in the tank because it is the first time, but i cant do it after the first. I have also been told that I should add sand first because it will minimize clouding. Also, I have been told that I will need a protien skimmer and a heater. I understand the skimmer but I live in south FL and it is about 80 every day so I think im gonna wait a little while on that but I am lookin for a skimmer. I have been told that I will need a reverse osmosis kit. Is this true? It sounds good but im low on budget so I'm not sure if I will be able to get one yet. I will probably just dechlorinize the water until my budget fills back up. Also, due to my budget problem, does anyone know if it will be ok to buy some rock now and more later? or must i wait and buy it all at once. Please help me out here. Is there anything else I will need? The more help the better. Thanks!

add the salt and water first let it mix for a few days till it's dissolved
then sand
then let it settle(sp)
i dont know how you'll fit a protien skimmer on a nano cube.
you will want a RO unit but is not NEEDED .. just makes water changes much easier
I will probably just dechlorinize the water until my budget fills back up.

you will need to use RO water either way... weather it be bought buy the gallon at the store orthrough a RO unit .
you may add LR later but you will have to watch your water parameters(sp)
you will also need a good test kit .. salifert is the best...
read up on SW tanks more before you start. it will only help

well heres what i would do I just got the 12g last month put my first coral in today just a little green ricordea (sp) and it split in the bag on the way home yay I got 2 Rics for $20.
:cheer: But anyway what i would do is just be real patient buy some sand and base rock first its less expensive than LR and you wont see much of the color anyway. then get some LR just enough for the outside of your aquascape to make it look good. let that cycle and then add inverts and later fish then coral.
As for the RO unit they're real expensive and not really worth the money unless you have a larger (45+) tank just use distiled water its already filtered through RO and its like $0.75 a galon or so. and you reallydont need a skimmer on a tank that small and there is no way to get a skimmer on there anyway, as for a heater get one cause it may be hot during the day but what does the temp drop down to at night? just cause its in there doesn't mean its always on.
I would recomend a submersible one with a thermostat. All-glass aquarium is the brand i got and it fits right in the back of the tank in the 3rd chamber with the return pump so you dont see it, nifty huh :D

to answer your question, no it stays the same at night maybe down to 77. its because of the humidity down here in FL. but it gets to low 40s in winter so ill definately pick one up before then. what does base rock look like and how much is it per pound? or is that not how you buy it? how do you place it and stuff fill me in. this is the first I'm hearing about it. :notsure:

So far I have been told that I can mix the salt and water in the tank because it is the first time, but I cant do it after the first.
--> You are right that you can not mix the water and salt after the first time. the salt mix may not dissolve completely also you may make a mistake on your amount and totally screw up your salinity and kill your fish.
I have also been told that I should add sand first because it will minimize clouding.
--> My personal opinion is that you have your bag of sand on the bottom of your tank and then fill it up half way with premixed water. then slit the end of the bag and carefully pull so that the sand just slides onto the bottom. then take a large measuring cup and carefully add water from your bucket of premixed salt water by dipping the cup halfway into the tank water and then tipping the water into the aquarium. I find this is to be the best method and while it is time consuming it does seem to minimize clouding.
Also, I have been told that I will need a protein skimmer and a heater. I understand the skimmer but I live in south FL and it is about 80 every day so I think I'm gonna wait a little while on that but I am lookin for a skimmer.
--> If you have a DX you should not need a protein skimmer. Replace the stock pump with something like a maxi-jet 400. then replace the bioballs and ceramic ring with live rock rubble. Cycle you tank for a few weeks and check your temperature to make sure it is ideal. Also you may not think you need a heater now, but in the winter you may change your tune when your tank drops 4 degrees and all your fish are dead. I live and Texas and we get triple digits. I still have a heater.
I have been told that I will need a reverse osmosis kit. Is this true? It sounds good but im low on budget so I'm not sure if I will be able to get one yet. I will probably just dechlorinize the water until my budget fills back up.
--> All an RO system does is purify your water. So you really do not need to spend the money on one unless you have a large system that requires large water changes. My suggestion to you (as a newbie) is to go to your lfs and get premixed water. normally it is less than a dollar a gallon. if you do a 10% water change every week you spend less than 12 dollars a month and you are assured of the water quality (that is if you like the way the store operates).
Also, due to my budget problem, does anyone know if it will be ok to buy some rock now and more later? or must I wait and buy it all at once.
--> If you get rock that is completely cured then you can get some now and some later. however if you get rock that is not completely cured it would be better to get all of the rock at once and cure it in your tank as it cycles. Another reason to get it all at one time is that as you cycle your water, benificial bacteria can speed up the process and allow for a larger bioload.
also DO NOT PUT LIVE STOCK IN UNTIL YOUR TANK HAS CYCLED. I would wait a month and constantly monitor your water quality
hope this helps. Please post picture of your progress. I am getting my own 24 cube dx in a couple of weeks. Also if someone who has more experiance has any discrepancies, post them so I can correct my process when i get my own cube.

Base rock is just like LR but without all the coraline growth it costs about half as much as LR and over time if its in with LR it will gett some corline growth on it (but only where the light shows. just place it in as you would LR and put the LR on top of it. HTH :D
