That is a great article. What beautiful photos. It makes me want a Crosshatch. But I dont have a tank yet much less 500 for one fish...lol
When I built this tank I was planning on putting a crosshatch in it. I just couldn't bring myself to spend that much on a fish, so I went with the cheaper route.

How do you keep the tank clean? I assume you can't have snails/hermits etc because so many of your fish would eat them...?
And nobody has picked at your clam or anything either? What a great tank!

I have lots of snails and crabs. I also have shrimp and starfish. What fish do you think would eat any of them. I don't have any fish that would harm any of my cleanup crew

There are several triggers that are pretty reef safe, Blue Jaws and Sargassums being 2 of the most safe. You should really do a little research, there are many people who keep triggers succesfully in a reef. By the way he is one of the coolest fish in my reef, lots of personality.
definitely. blue jaw trigger can be more safe than many of the common "reef safe" fish.

Not a whole lot new. Everything is going great. I can really start to see the corals taking off. I have been feeding the tank a little heavier. I think it needed it. I am pretty sure it was lacking some nutrients. I also wanted to take the time to mention how much I love this skimmer. If anybody is setting up a large tank and is looking for a skimmer, you must check out the reeflos. This one has none of the upgrades avail. (larger cup, better pump) and kicks some serious butt. I know they are not cheap but I truly believe a skimmer can make or break a tank. Also my in sump fuge has really started to take off.

This is about one weeks of skim. I get about 8 cups.

Fuge

I'm not trying to be rude here, but your fuge looks like its got throw up in there. LOL
I hear you. I don't know why my cheato grows like that, but it did that in my last tank too. I think it has something to do with the red cotton algae that mixes in with it. It still grows well, I just remove about half of it every couple weeks. It is doing a great job because I don't have a piece of nuciance algea in my display.

I ended up not using it. I couldn't find the southtown sand I wanted to use and didn't feel like spending a fortune on sand when I didn't even know how effective it would be.

You would be surprised how a cup in the morning can really get you moving
. Better then any coffee!

My cup drains into the milk jug. That is what I get in about a week.
