29 Bio Lighting

I'm a new Bio owner. What is the purpose of each light? Blue and white? Should I leave one on more than the other, or both on, or what? Also I have a small algae problem. Is the lighting helping it grow or does it keep the algae in control? Thanks.

as far as i know the white one which is the 10k is mostly for growing corals while the actinic(blue one) is mostly for color but also helps corals grow. algea problems are normal in new tanks and tanks with new liverock. Either get a good clean up crew, wait it out(if its a new tank),and change your lighting schedule to only about 6-8 hours a day if you are doing it longer.
How long do you currently light your tank?

I leave my light on about 12 hours. I've got 2 turbo snails and 2 hermit crabs. What else should I add? I don't necessarily want a bunch of inverts in my tank but I'd rather have them than algae. The tank I bought used from a guy. It was already established. He had a small algae problem when I bought it. My pH is low as well. Do you think that also could be a contributor to the algae? I used pH 8.2 to bump it up and NOTHING changed.

Yeah, seems like your lights are on way too long. Excess nutrients can also contribute to your algae problem. It seems like you should also increase your clean up crew. I would get 10 bluelegs, 10 astrea, and a few more turbos at least. How old are the lights? If they are more than 8-12 months old they can run insufficiently and cause algae blooms as well.
good luck!

i would definatly cut down on the lighting by like 3-4 hours need larger clean up crew and dont feed you fish a lot check you nitrate and nitrite levels also
