So I got my hands on one of these, and I found the instruction manual, but it is severely lacking. I modified chamber 2 with egg crate, pulled out the two divider plates, and have a small refugium complete with led lights to get the chaeto to grow.
My question is this: In the third chamber with the pump, is there any downside to having the water exceed the maximum level? Since it is all self contained, if I lose power, I wont overflow the tank, and I cannot really see any reason why it would be a problem. I am not wanting to fill it up to top, but I do like having the extra water in chamber 2.

No the water level guides are to assist in the working of the bio balls. If you have taken them out you can disregard the level sight glass.

yeap i threw away my bioballs, and filled up the tank to tiptop plus it cuts that annoying noise off... the water trickling down
