3 gallon Picotope

I was thinking about getting a 3 gallon picotope but i was wondering the one i was looking at needs a heater it recomended a 25-50watt heater is that rite? I was going to put a pompom crab in there and maybe some other shrimp. Does anyone have any experience with picotopes and/or pompom crabs. And are they worth it.

yep it's worth it. I have a jbj picotope with 2 pom pom crabs and 3 sexy shripm in it. Thew are so fun to watch. Just put a 1-2 in sand bed and a3-6 pounds of live rock in it. You should be able to hide the heater along the back at the bottom behind the rock.

well i dont want to big or else ill never see my pompoms ive heard they are really secritive. ill try to post pics when its finished but i havent even orderd it yet. so it might be a while.

I just ordered something similar, it's called the Deco Aquarium Kit. I was about to get the Pico Tope but didn't like the lighting since I'm setting this up as a coral frag tank. The Deco Kit comes with an 18 watt 50/50, which is twice as much wattage/gallon as the Pico Tope. Just something to think about. Best of luck!

yea i saw that too but i like the look of the picotope better and im probably wont add any high light needing coral anyways ill probably just add some mushrooms.

Ok, so the Deco Kit arrived today and I had assumed from the pics that the light would be adjustable to a point where it wouldn't put a full 18 watts directly onto the tank....well, I was very wrong. Sent it back already with an order to exchange with a Pico Tope. My main tank only has 3 w/gallon and I'll soon be getting a 24 gallon aquapod and replacing the lights with 2-40 watt bulbs... so yeah, I don't need all that light either just for a little frag tank of corals that will be grown to go in either of the other tanks....

Do you have any pics? I have a spot under my 29 gallon that I want to put a 3 gal. in, but i would like to see some pics first, it would be a frag/ invert tank, I used to have a 10 gallon, and I kinda miss having a smaller tank (even though a 29 isn't THAT big, compared to a 3g though.... hmm..) but please, I would like to see some pics if you could please :)

Hey monk. I was thinking of getting this tank. Does the light work fine for corals. What was your problem with it?

The lighting is fine for corals, it's just too much for doing what I wanted and the lighting mount isn't adjustable like I thought it was. 6 watts per gallon is twice as much as the pico tope has and with my 12 gallon tank having 3 watts per gallon and the Aquapod 24 I'm setting up with 40 watt bulbs it's 3.4 watts per gallon. The 3 gallon is going to be my frag tank to get small frags and grow them onto rocks to be a good size for the other tanks...I figured that spending $50 once and $2 here and there for frags will save me tons of $$ in the long run instead of buying $30+ corals each time.

my 3 gal pico i got it this week,to tide me over until i get my other tank up and going, my lfs gave me like 3 pounds of ls from thier tanks and i bought a nice looking cured lr from one of their display tank, the sand had a snail in it and i think a conch i have not seen it just yet but when i sat down to look into the tank the sand bed was pushing up from beneath so....
i took off the filter that came with it and added the smallest marineland bio wheel filter i could find and slowed down the flow with some filter material
i bought another lr today and 2 blue legs, the rock has some kind of bivalve on it, well heres some pics .... the last pic is of one of my lunar lights i put on until i get other tank up, oh i do have the smallest clown in it ive ever seen too, im sure ill get some flack over that but hes so little i just wanted to have something in it besides rock

Very nice, probably going to get crap for the clown, but as long as you keep everything going good, then i don't see a problem
