yesterday i got my new all glass 300. 10 x 2 x 2 . thing is huge. right now im running a 150 with a 100 sump/fuge. so im gonna build a stand and have a 300 display and the 150 i'll turn into the sump/fuge/frag tank!!
i have a pm skimmer capable of 300 gals. 2 halide 20k 400 watt and some powerheads. thats it. i do 10% weekly rodi waterchanges and feed everyother day. i want to keep sps. ive had softies and lps for years. main questions are uv filter or not??? heaters?? chiller?? controllers?? reactors??
some people say weekly water changes are enough. others have thousands of dollars in equipment. what is necessary and what is an accessory? thanks.

looks to me you already know what you are doing.
hardly anybody runs a uv anymore.
chiller only if you need it.
i believe the heater all have ratings on them i run 2 14 inch heaters in my 150 gallon.
bet it was fun moving that tank huh.

I would say good calcium reactor like a deltec=must... maybe a kalk reactor too depending on how the tank uses elements. UV isn't a good idea on a reef, it tends to kill alot of free floating organisms that filter feeders feed on. I would definitely have an auto top off i.e. Tunze osmolator. You will probably need heaters for the night time. I dunno if you'll need a chiller. What is the day/night temp fluctuation and highs/lows?
I would definitely run an controller&monitor... that's a big investment, you want exact and continuous readings especially if you're going to dump a bunch of money in sps.

angler is in the sump for now. he'll have his own 20 gal home soon. and i already have an auto top off rodi system. what type or brands of comtrollers would you run. 1 controller to do everything? or individual ones for temp, ph? what else do they make them for? thanks again.

individual ports for everything, but it should all connect to something like an aquacontroller jr. or similar device.

so when i upgrade from the 150 to the 300 this weekend how much of my old water do i have to use to keep the new tank from cycling? i posted another thread about my kid dumping a 1 lb tub of flake in the tank and everything is starting to die. ive done 3 30 gal waterchanges in 2 1/2 days and its not getting any better. is there a way to put all new water in the 300 and just transfer everything over without cycling it? thanks for your ideas

you can do a 80% water change if you want .as long as the salinity and temp are the same.
the water dont hardly do anything for the cycle just the sand and lr.
things bacteria can grow on.
change out 100 gallons on the 150 .
add a phosphate reactor and run carbon they will help clean the water quick.

When I moved my tank, I essentially did a 100% water change. Like deejeff said, the water doesnt do anything for the cycle. Just make sure the parameters for the new water are the same as the old water, or you will shock the fish, corals and inverts.

My recommendation would be to just get new sand. You can use some of your old sand to seed the new tank. Also, I am not sure what your Screen Name is referring to, but if it is what I think, it is not appropriate, there are young children on this forum, if that is not what you are referring to, my apologizes.
