That was the news story i was watching as i was leaving work yesterday
some one - man operation was busted yesterday, he was caught with over 300 lbs of LR and Corals. i think it was outside of he protected areas because they said it was only a misdemeanor and he will likely get a fine and one year in jail.
When the reporter was doing the story they had his find sitting in about 1-2' of water, 10' from the beach. They said they were waiting on experts to come and check on their health, and if healthy enough, they will bring them back out to the general area from where they were taken.
what do you think about this?

well if it was a few miles from there in the marine sanctuary it is a federal crime and he would have a hell of a lot more to deal with than a slap on the wrist

I doubt he was doing it for his personal tank. Was probably going to try and sell it.
I think people that 'harvest' rock/corals/fish/etc from the ocean should have to have a license and there should be limits as to how much and from where.

I agree. if you figure he had 300 lbs of lr. that could be up to 8 dollars a pound in my area ..... 8X300 = $1100 not to mention tax.... then whatever he could get for the corals .... that is just wrong. they need to crack down a little harder than a fine and a year in jail.

I wouldn't be suprised if people tried to sell it by saying it's from a wreck dive and is full of precious gems/metals.
How else would you get a non-saltwater tank owner to pay $8+/lb for rock?
