yet another...
we have 2 percula clows, 1 green clown goby, hermits and snails. our plan was to add:
lemonpeel angel
yellow watchman goby
six line wrasse
flame hawkfish
couple pom pom crabs
an emerald crab
cleaner shrimp
im worried about the flame hawkfish, says they will eat inverts and small fish. i dont mind if occasionally we lose a hermit but what about the green clown goby?
our filter is the fluval 304 which im told is overkill for our volume and would allow us to stock a little bit higher than if we had poorer filtration. any thoughts on that?
so does this list look good? what would you switch up or drop?

I have the exact same filter for my 45gal. It works great, and I highly recommend that you use carbon bags along with the biomax. The carbon keeps the water clean and clear. Also rinse half the media ever two weeks MAX! and rinse the sponges in the filter about every 7 days. There much more maintenance on canister filters than a sump tank.

It may sound rigorous, but trust me, that canister gets filthy pretty quick. You will start to see a bad algae outbreak if its not cleaned on time. I went to NY for a month without cleaning the filter and let me dad feed the fish and what not. My tank was COVERED in algae. It looked like a swamp in there. I quickly then cleaned everything and now clean the filter every 2 weeks and the sponges about every 7 days.

in my opinon don't add any more fish except maybe a gramma or blenny...something small. Are those clowns true percula or ocellaris? Watch those phosphates...they will shoot out of control in no time as well as the nitrates.

I would agree...The fish are small now but they will get big! You would be ok adding maybe a firefish, royal gramma, fridmani or something along those lines.

could you give me a quick run down on your process opening the filter, doing your maint. and then switching the filter back on? i opened it up, cleaned half my sponges then slammed her shut and turned it back on. there was of course tons of air in the filter so it blew bubbles for half a minute but it also spit out a ton of random gross ----. should i have drained off the water in the filter and topped it off with water from the sump?

Heres the steps that I followed from the manual.
1) Close the valve, unplug and detach tubes from filter
2) Dump out as much of the water as you can and then open canister
3) Rinse all your sponges under clean filtered water (not tap water) and rinse HALF of your media.
4) Rinse your canister and all of of your trays.
5) Put everything back including trays and media .
6) Lock all your hoses inplace and and make sure everything is secure.
7) Open valve up and if water doesnt start flowing in, give it a few pumps.
8) Wait till the filter is full of water THEN plug it back in.
Occasionally you will see air bubbles at first.

thanks for this. im surprised they say all your sponges at once but i guess it the media that you only rinse half of. is it the media then you have all your beneficial bacteria? i was worried that there was lots in the sponges too that i didnt want to upset too much. but go with the manual would be smart.
