welcome aboard, and since you asked,.
the ugf's and cc are not really reccommended anymore, for marine keeping, most of us either don't use them, or have converted to a deep sand bed and or the use of a skimmer instead, less maintenance and better water quality, IMO
HTH and good luck

Yep
Hey josh - I love your choice of words decribing the crushed coral - call a spade a spade - forthright and to the point.
Crushed coral is a "poop trap"
No better way to say it !!
fshhub's reply is right on the money !!!
CC and dolamite with undergravel filter, although it works - is sort of a outdated method that required a lot more maintenance from the hobbyiest. Keeping it clean and leading to water quality issues down the road.
It's not a might happen - it's a most likely will happen. Most likely ;)
And zar, welcome to the board !!!
You may want to do a search on here for substrates or DSB.
This topic has been and will continue to be a very hot topic here for sure.
Good luck and do some searching - you'll find a lot of good info from folks here that have done it - and have reported their success - and not just talk about it ;)
