I just started it up about 2 months ago and was wondering if anyone has any ideas or suggestions to make it better suited for the fish etc.

Do you always run the water level that low or are you in the middle of doing a water change or something when the picture was taken? Either way, it looks like you are off to a great start. I would add some more live rock and maybe reconsider the tang in a 40 gal. The blue hippos get very large and will not be happy long term in there. Nice start though.

yeah i was in the middle of a water change, and it is usually a little higher than that. I don't know what to do with the tang that I have because i've heard it can grow to about 10" and it has had ick almost the entire time I have had it. I've tried everything to fix it and the only thing that is working is the fire shrimp that i recently got.

Maybe see if you lfs will take him back for store credit, or even just give him to them to get him off your hands. Either that or if you know anyone in your area with a larger tank you might see if they want him.
As far as treating ich, most do so with hypo salinity. Do a search in the disease forum and there should be a thread that describes in detail how to do the treatment. You will need a quarentine tank though as you will have to lower your salinity to 1.009 which would kill you inverts. HTH.

I think I am going to take your advice and just take him back because he has really been nothing but trouble. thanks

Sorry to hear that you have to get rid of a fish so early in your tank, but it is better to learn now then have to deal with a bunch of problems later on. I applaud your willingness to research and learn rather than think that you know better than everyone else and even though it hasn't worked for most you can make it work.

this is what it looks like now. 2 quick questions lol I have 2 40 watt t8 bulbs in the fixture and i was wondering if that was enough light for coral. I have 2 mushrooms and they seem to be ok. Also, what kind of fish could i get to complement the other fish in the tank?

well clown fish are always nice, and maby a blenny or some kind of dottyback or royal gramma, sixline wrasses are nice to lol i could go on forever, but the lighting wont be ok long term, you will nead at least T5s or PCs for soft corals and lps
