a brand new reef ready tank (allglass) goes for around $250-$300 plus $35 for the glass tops. The pipe kit for inside of the overflow goes for 35-40, so depending on age and condition this is a good deal if the skimmer and lights are decent.

He said everything except livestock. So that would include everything needed, yes the stand too.

There is no way this is going to be good stuff. Especially coming from a LFS. They have to make money on this, so this means they paid even less. You can barily get a good skimmer for 400 bucks.

I dont really agree with that at all. Maybe I'm missing something here but I wouldn't pay more than $50-75 bucks for aused 75g and unless the halides are some sort of newer name brand fixture used halides usually go cheap as well (about $100 per light which would be about $200 for a 75g). we have no way of knowing about the skimmer. if its a 10yr old ETSS reef devil it could be a good skimmer but just too old to be worth more than $75 (or it could be a seaclone who knows). Successful Pet stores dont have to make money at all selling used gear. My local pet store sells stuff like this occasionally in their own forums. they need to move it more than they need to make money off of it. usually they've already got more than their money's worth from it already.
In short for a used 75g set up with halides and skimmer with no livestock, sand or rock I think its about right in line with what it should cost (which means a good deal for you and getting something out of it from the seller. thats the way its suppose to be). If the halides are working correctly its hard for this set up to be a bad deal regardless of the other equipment. some of this stuff is easy enough to check before buying. look at the tank and fill it up with water. plug in the halides and let them run for 10 minutes, put the skimmer in the tank you just filled up and plug it in (bring vinegar or saltwater if you want to see it make bubbles).

Sure this could be the case. But do you think it is likely?

find out the brand of the light..find out the brand of the skimmer..you said everything except livestock, does that include livesand and live rock? check it out see if he is giving u a COMPELTE sump..also see if the system is complete enough so that all you have to do is add water and fishys..
if the system is complete like how i stated, good MH fixture that is not old, then id give him 300-400

I will find out the details for sure. Also, just to clear this up, he just works at the store part time. Its not his store, or the owner, he is someone that loves the hobby that is upgrading to a 125.

So it is a used system from someone? That is a different story.

Im sorry, I didn't make that clear? Yes, this is used equipment.
Then in that case it really does matter what is included. But yeah, 75 gallon with everything but livestock for 300 bucks is probably a good deal. Depending on what kind of equiptment.
That is how I build my 180. I'd buy a used setup. With liverock and everything. Keep what I wanted (mainly live rock) and sell the rest. When I tore it down I ended up with about 300 pounds of live rock and other stuff. Mag pumps a few skimmers ect. And I was down maybe 200 bucks.
