48 inch bulb question....

Is a 48 inch bulb 48 inches from end to end including the metal prongs? or is the 48 inches just the glass part? or does it mean that they fit inside a hood that is 48 inches long?
Kinda of dumb question, but i am building a DIY lighting hood and I hav a 48 inch wide tank. I am using vinyl gutter material for the canopy for the lights, and have not purchased bulbs yet (LFS is closed for the day).
Anyway- I want to make sure that I do not make it too short- but would like to be able to make it just a little shorter than the tank, so i can let it rest inside the top of the plastic rim around the top of the tank... but if the 48inch bulbs are 48inches, that will not work.
SO- if someone could meassure the length of the bulb from end to end, including the metal prongs, and post it, that would be helpful.
Thanks....

Just measured mine, and the entire/total length of mine is 48".That is including the endcaps...This would be the minimal space needed to install this size fixture...
