Yes! I'd definately go with something to filter the water and lights!
-What would you like to have in this tank? That really determines your lighting and filtration needs.

Sorry! I guess that was a little vague.
It is a five gallon, I will be puttin in a DSB and some live rock. Id like to keep a few corals, not sure what kind would be good for a beginner. I know id need some snails and hermits. If possible id like a fish or 2, but i know it may be difficult in a 5 gal. Just wondering what type of filtration as far as hob or sump. And as far as lighting goes, would just two regular output strip lights be enough. It would give about 28 watts. Thanks again

A DSB in a 5g will take up lots of room... Just a thought.
You can get as fancy or stay as basic as you want. My 6g currently has no mechanical filtration, no DSB, no sump, no fuge, no skimmer, no nothing... except I left the bio-wheel in place. But without these other forms of filtration I'm relying on water changes to keep the nitrates down. Currently I'm doing 1g per-week water change. I'm dieing to add a fuge, which I plan to do so soon. I'm thinking around a 10g fuge.
No fish in a 5g I would think but maybe some decorator shrimp.
A 32w PC would be nice if you have room. You could keep most any softies with that. LPS too if there is room.

I also agree that a DSB would take up to much room.
Just like 10 lb LR.
I would go with the Eclipse 6. Its only one gallon more, you could put in a small goby, and the filter is built in the hood. Theres a guy that customizes the hoods on this site and he puts in nice lighting so you can keep corals. Just a thought.
