you could take out the riser pipes and cap up the ug filter and you got a plenum system right there..
what kinda lighting system you got?

So you think I should do away with my undergravel filter system? And what is the ug filter and how do you cap it off?
What is a plenum system? For my lighting I have two lights one is a power glow 18000K 40 watt bulb and a coralife actinic 03 blue 40 watt fluorescent. hope that is right.

ug filter is short for undergravel filter.. if you take the pipes out, (it shouldve come with caps when you bought the ug system..if not then you should be able find replacements at your pet shop), so cap it up, and youre done.. so in other words take out the pipes, leave the ug plate.
a plenum system is a low to no oxygen zone where anaerobic bacteria turns nitrates into nitrogen gas, which means the end result of the nitrogen cycle..
aerobic(this meaning high oxygen areas) bacteria can take care of the ammonia->nitrite->nitrate process, but cant take care of the nitrate->nitrogen gas process, it requires a different type of bacteria(anaerobic) to do this. so as you know anaerobic requires low to no oxygen areas, which is what your plenum will accomplish.

How will i keep oxygen in the water if i take out the air pipes.
I have 4 pipes 2 of them are hooked up to a air pump. and 2 have power heads on them. I have a wisper power filter and i have a magnum power filter with a bio wheel attached to it.
This tank use to be a fresh water tank which was set up for 2 years. then i set the salt water tank up about 7 months ago. so far everything is going good with it. the only problem i have had is that i have had a couple of camal back shrimp to die and a little algea. I have heard of these skimmers you guys talk about but have yet to buy one so please tell me what I should do now.

best options are to..
-DIY a sump/fuge for filtration..do a search on that.
-buy a good skimmer!
-unhook those airlines to the powerheads, youre probably getting a lot of salt creep..
-you can leave the magnum running, just in case you ever get a chiller, thatll be perfect to run it..

here's my 55 gallon reef. I like soft corals like colt and button polyps. The only fish in the tank is a bicolered pseudochromis and a blue damsel.
