5gal Sump Question

Hello,
I am currently running a 20g high tank. I talked with a few people that had larger tanks and they all seem to just run a sump type setup instead of a wet/dry or canister filter. I am currently using a Marineland hang on the back bio wheel filter. My question is does anyone know what I could put in a 5gal tank to make a sump? Just a bed of charcoal or mud? What equipment would have to go into the sump?
Thanks
Mark

having a sump provides a place to put ur equipment and increase water volume. never heard of a 5g tho 10 is the smallest ive seen. so u could put ur filter and heater in the sump to give ur DT a cleaner look, lots of people also use live rock to give them more biological filtration.

it's going to be somewhat of a task not having micro bubbles return to the display with such a tiny sump. you'll have to use a weak return pump.
